TLDR Review: LG Gram +View 17-inch Monitor
Verdict
The LG gram +View 17-inch monitor is an excellent choice if you need a highly portable, color-accurate secondary screen that works particularly well with MacBooks and other USB-C devices. Its stunning display quality and lightweight design make it perfect for remote work and frequent travel. However, the fragile stand, limited refresh rate, and questionable customer support history might deter some buyers. If you need more robust support or HDMI connectivity, you may want to explore other portable monitors with stronger warranties and broader input options. For now, this LG model shines best in color fidelity and portability but demands careful handling and consideration of macOS quirks.
- Top pro:
- Works flawlessly with 2022 MacBook Air M2, delivering excellent color accuracy and crisp clarity without the fuzziness common in many non-Apple external displays.
- Top con:
- The included magnetic stand/cover has a weak magnet and feels unstable, prone to slipping or falling, requiring a very flat surface or wall mounting for secure use.
Pros
- •Works flawlessly with 2022 MacBook Air M2, delivering excellent color accuracy and crisp clarity without the fuzziness common in many non-Apple external displays.
- •Native resolution can be adjusted from the default 1280x800 to a sharp 1920x1200 on macOS, providing clear text and a comfortable viewing experience.
- •Powers directly from a single USB-C cable via USB Power Delivery (7.5W), requiring no extra power source, which boosts portability.
- •Extremely lightweight and compact design, making it ideal for travel and mobile work setups like RVs and hotel rooms.
- •The anti-glare IPS panel with up to 99% DCI-P3 color gamut offers vibrant, bright visuals with excellent detail.
- •Plug-and-play functionality with quick, responsive USB-C connectivity works seamlessly across various devices including MacBook, Chromebook, and MS Surface.
- •Portrait (vertical) mode is easy to configure via display settings, catering well to different workflows like coding or document reading.
- •Built-in speakers provide basic audio output without additional accessories.
- •Sleek Titan Silver aesthetic complements modern laptops nicely.
Cons
- •The included magnetic stand/cover has a weak magnet and feels unstable, prone to slipping or falling, requiring a very flat surface or wall mounting for secure use.
- •No HDMI input limits connectivity options for desktop computers or devices without USB-C display output.
- •Display resolution resets to default after rebooting on macOS, an annoying but apparently system-related quirk rather than a monitor fault.
- •Advanced display settings such as contrast and color adjustments require Windows software; these controls are inaccessible on macOS.
- •Limited 60Hz refresh rate makes it unsuitable for gaming or fast-motion video tasks.
- •The manufacturer requires a proprietary LG USB-C cable for full functionality; generic cables might not work properly, and extra cables are costly.
- •Some users reported serious reliability issues, including screen malfunctions within weeks of use, with unhelpful customer support refusing warranty claims, making brand support a concern.
- •No reliable protective case included, so users need to buy a separate case for safe transport, adding to the overall expense.
- •The price is higher compared to some similar portable monitors, which may make the cost a tough sell for budget-conscious buyers.
