TLDR Review: LG 16MR70 Portable Monitor
Verdict
The **LG 16MR70.ASDU1 16” Gram +View IPS Portable Monitor** is a fantastic companion for MacBook Air M2 users who value color accuracy, sharp resolution, and portability combined with seamless USB-C plug-and-play functionality. It shines for remote work and travel use, delivering a crisp and bright display in a compact, lightweight design. However, its stability issues with the magnetic stand and the lack of protection from the included cover might be a dealbreaker if you’re rough on gear or need a sturdier setup. Also, beware of the proprietary cable and limited macOS display controls. If you prioritize travel-friendly sleekness and Mac compatibility despite these quirks—or need a solid second screen for light office work—this monitor fits the bill. If you want a second portable monitor but are concerned about the fragility of the stand or support issues, you might want to explore other similarly sized portable monitors with stronger stands or better warranty experiences.
- Top pro:
- Works flawlessly with 2022 MacBook Air M2, delivering excellent color and clarity without the fuzziness seen in many non-Apple displays.
- Top con:
- The magnetic stand, while clever, feels unstable and prone to slipping; it needs a flat, steady surface or better mounting solutions.
Pros
- •Works flawlessly with 2022 MacBook Air M2, delivering excellent color and clarity without the fuzziness seen in many non-Apple displays.
- •The default 1280x800 resolution can be adjusted on macOS to a sharp 1920x1200, providing comfortable text size and crisp images.
- •Portrait (vertical) mode setup is easy through macOS Display settings with simple rotation options.
- •Powers directly from MacBook Air with the included USB-C cable and USB Power Delivery at 7.5W—no extra power supply needed.
- •Lightweight and ultra-portable design makes it perfect for travel and remote work scenarios like RVs and hotel rooms.
- •True plug-and-play functionality with USB-C, requiring no complicated installation across Mac, Chromebook, and MS Surface devices.
- •Magnetic stand and cover design are clever, providing an intuitive attachment once you get the hang of it.
- •Solid brightness with crisp IPS panel offers excellent display quality and color accuracy for a 16” portable monitor.
- •Runs at a standard 60Hz refresh rate, sufficient for office tasks and everyday use.
Cons
- •The magnetic stand, while clever, feels unstable and prone to slipping; it needs a flat, steady surface or better mounting solutions.
- •The included protective cover has a weak magnet, offering minimal protection and often detaching during transport; no reliable case is included.
- •Requires a proprietary LG USB-C cable rather than a standard one, and replacement cables are reportedly expensive.
- •Limited display controls on macOS, with advanced settings (contrast, color) accessible only through Windows software.
- •No HDMI input, limiting versatility for desktop or gaming setups without additional adapters.
- •Resolution settings reset after reboot, likely a macOS-related annoyance rather than the monitor’s fault.
- •Some users experienced a serious screen malfunction after about three weeks, with poor manufacturer support and refusal of warranty service.
- •Relatively high price compared to similar portable monitors that may lack Mac compatibility but cost less.
