TLDR Review: Lexar 1TB External SSD
Verdict
The Lexar 1TB ES5 Magnetic External SSD is a standout option for anyone seeking ultra-fast data transfers, excellent cross-platform compatibility, and specific support for pro video formats on iPhone and other devices. Its MagSafe feature and lightweight, compact design make it especially appealing to Apple users, although the weak magnet means you shouldn't rely on it for holding the drive securely during active use. If you want top-tier speed paired with good durability and a practical accessory set, this SSD fits the bill well. For a similar pro-focused SSD without the magnet but strong performance on Apple devices, keep an eye on upcoming models from other brands, but as of now, this Lexar model is a highly versatile, reliable choice.
- Top pro:
- Delivers blazing fast data transfer speeds up to 2000MB/s, making it ideal for handling large files and heavy workloads like Apple ProRes Raw video.
- Top con:
- The magnetic attachment is notably weak—strong enough to hold the SSD in place but not sufficient to reliably hold it as a phone stand or for vigorous use on vertical surfaces.
Pros
- •Delivers blazing fast data transfer speeds up to 2000MB/s, making it ideal for handling large files and heavy workloads like Apple ProRes Raw video.
- •Compatible with a wide range of devices, including iPhone 15/16/17 Pro models, PC, Mac, PS4/PS5, and various cameras.
- •Supports professional-grade video formats such as Apple ProRes and Samsung Pro Video, perfect for content creators and videographers.
- •Lightweight, compact, and sleek silver design with minimalist, eco-friendly packaging, making it highly portable.
- •Built with durability in mind; claimed drop resistance up to 2 meters and a sturdy, well-engineered build.
- •Includes versatile connectivity options with both USB-C and USB-A adapters, plus a high-quality cable optimized for best performance.
- •Stays cool during extended use thanks to a hollow plastic shell that dissipates heat effectively.
- •Features MagSafe compatibility, a rare and convenient trait for iPhone users wanting secure attachment.
- •Easy to use with a dedicated app offering simple password protection and efficient auto-backup functions.
- •Excellent write speeds offer solid performance boosts for gaming and creative workflows.
Cons
- •The magnetic attachment is notably weak—strong enough to hold the SSD in place but not sufficient to reliably hold it as a phone stand or for vigorous use on vertical surfaces.
- •Can get slightly warm under heavy or prolonged data transfer, though it remains within safe operating temperatures.
- •Best performance is obtained using the included cable; third-party cables may not deliver the advertised speeds.
- •Despite a large storage capacity cited at 1TB, some users mention confusion with capacities labeled as 1.9TB in unrelated reviews (make sure to verify exact model specs).
- •Limited maximum video resolution for ProRes functions (4K/60 max) constrained by iPhone hardware, not the SSD.
- •The magnetism, while practical, is weak enough that accidental drops are still a risk when attached to devices.
