TLDR Review: Kobalt 35-Piece Mechanic's Tool Set
Verdict
The Kobalt 338358 35-Piece 1/4-Inch Drive Mechanic's Tool Set offers an impressive range of bits and sockets, but it falls short in terms of durability and reliability. Recurrent issues with bits and socket adapters not locking securely, along with design flaws in the ratchet, suggest that this set is best suited for light, hobbyist tasks rather than professional or heavy-duty use. It's likely worth exploring more robust alternatives if you're seeking tools for demanding applications.
- Top pro:
- The set includes an impressive and well-thought-out variety of sockets and bits, including security Torx.
- Top con:
- Multiple reports of bits and the socket adapter falling out easily, even during light use.
Pros
- •The set includes an impressive and well-thought-out variety of sockets and bits, including security Torx.
- •Offers 6-sided sockets that go up to 14 mm, which is more comprehensive than some competing products.
- •The compact wrench and size of the case enhance the portability and convenience of the toolset.
- •All components fit snugly within the sturdy case, reducing the chance of pieces falling out during transport.
- •The set's sockets are of good quality and can be used effectively with a better 1/4” drive ratchet.
Cons
- •Multiple reports of bits and the socket adapter falling out easily, even during light use.
- •The ratchet's design has significant flaws, particularly with the steel springs that hold bits in place, often leading to premature wear or failure.
- •Experiences with the warranty process have been problematic, with reports of poor customer service and difficulty obtaining replacements.
- •The ratchet teeth can slip or break under increased torque, indicating a lack of durability for heavier or professional use.
- •Bits are noted to be brittle, potentially snapping when used on tougher fasteners.
- •The sockets and bits do not reliably lock into the driver, compromising their function during use.
- •Frustration with missing parts and design flaws compared to older versions of the set.
