TLDR Review: Kensington Expert Trackball Mouse
Verdict
The Kensington Expert Trackball Mouse (K64325) is a reliable tool for anyone seeking precision, comfort, and reduced wrist strain, especially in professional or creative workflows. Its large, smooth ball and customizable buttons make it a standout for productivity, though some quirks like the scroll ring feel and software issues might require patience or third-party help. If you're hunting for excellent ergonomics and precise control rather than gaming responsiveness, this trackball is worth serious consideration. For users wanting seamless, glitch-free customization and who are open to alternative software, this mouse will deliver solid performance with some adjustment time. If you're looking for a trackball with a more recessed ball or tighter scroll ring feel, or if you prioritize flawless software out of the box, you might also want to keep an eye on other models, but this remains a strong contender in its category.
- Top pro:

- Top con:

Pros
- •Ambidextrous design makes it suitable for both left- and right-handed users, increasing versatility.
- •Large 55mm finger-operated ball allows for precise, smooth, and comfortable cursor control, outperforming many thumb-operated trackballs.
- •Excellent reduction in wrist and shoulder fatigue, especially during long sessions, making it ideal for professionals and power users.
- •Four large, customizable buttons enhance productivity, with flexible programming via the KensingtonWorks software or third-party tools.
- •Scroll ring enables quick, smooth navigation through documents and web pages after setup, a noted improvement over older models.
- •Compatible and stable on modern Macs, including Apple M1 silicon, with no connectivity issues reported.
- •Durable, heavy base with rubber feet prevents sliding, providing a sturdy and premium feel on the desk.
- •TrackballWorks software supports global and app-specific button customization; third-party software like Steermouse or X-Mouse Button Control can improve customization further.
- •Easy to clean by simply lifting the ball to access sensors, aiding in consistent performance.
- •Enables precise, frame-by-frame control favored by graphic designers and video editors.
Cons
- •Scroll ring can feel loose or have a plastic-on-plastic texture, which some users find distracting.
- •The upper two of the four buttons can be hard to reach comfortably, and simultaneous button presses are challenging to execute.
- •Kensington’s TrackballWorks software can cause input lag and issues with button chording, especially for gaming, sometimes requiring third-party software to overcome limitations.
- •The trackball may feel stiff or sticky initially, needing a few days of use or cleaning to reach optimal smoothness.
- •The device wakes from sleep mode only by a button click, which also registers as a click in the OS—this can be awkward during use.
- •High-profile ball design may feel bulky or slightly outdated; a recessed ball might improve ergonomics.
- •The scroll wheel is sometimes noisy and slightly unsteady, though still functional.
- •Using this device exclusively may cause shoulder strain; alternating with another mouse is recommended for heavy users.
- •Not designed for competitive gaming, with some users noting performance variability between units.
- •Some perceive the build quality as slightly cheap despite overall durability and good finish.
