TLDR Review: iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo Robot Vacuum & Mop
Verdict
The iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo offers an impressive all-in-one vacuum and mop solution with advanced navigation, smart obstacle avoidance, and a hassle-reducing AutoWash Dock that truly elevates robot cleaning convenience. Its spinning mop pads and deep scrubbing capability make it especially effective on hard floors, while Carpet Boost aids carpet cleaning. However, the app’s limited usability and occasional hardware quirks may frustrate tech-savvy users who want more control and seamless operation. Customer service concerns have also been noted, so we recommend buying from a retailer with a strong return policy just in case. For those seeking a smarter app experience or easier brush maintenance, consider exploring other robot vacuums, but if you want a powerful combo that tackles vacuuming and mopping with minimal hands-on effort, this model is a solid pick.
- Top pro:
- Impressively maps large homes quickly and efficiently, especially when floors are free of obstacles, ensuring thorough coverage.
- Top con:
- App usability falls short with a complicated interface, difficult room labeling, no simple list view, and limited options for partial map updates or ignoring repeat cleaning in patterned areas.
Pros
- •Impressively maps large homes quickly and efficiently, especially when floors are free of obstacles, ensuring thorough coverage.
- •Uses ClearView Pro LiDAR navigation for smooth steering around furniture, baseboards, and corners, including behind couches.
- •Features spinning DualClean Mop Pads that extend edges for 18% more coverage and SmartScrub technology that delivers 2x deeper scrubbing, particularly effective on tile and hard floors.
- •AutoWash Dock enhances convenience by self-emptying debris (lasting up to 75 days) and periodically rinsing, washing, and heat-drying mop pads for ongoing freshness.
- •Recognizes and avoids obstacles such as cords, socks, pet waste, and stairs using PrecisionVision AI and specialized sensors, preventing mishaps.
- •Carpet Boost technology automatically increases suction on carpets for better dirt and pet hair pickup.
- •Operates quietly relative to similar robotic vacuums, making cleaning less disruptive.
- •Compatible with Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant for hands-free control and scheduling via the Roomba Home App.
- •Offers four cleaning modes (vacuum, mop, combo clean, vacuum then mop) and customizable routines, including repeat mopping in high-traffic areas or nighttime cleaning.
- •Reliable battery life supports extended cleaning sessions without frequent interruptions.
Cons
- •App usability falls short with a complicated interface, difficult room labeling, no simple list view, and limited options for partial map updates or ignoring repeat cleaning in patterned areas.
- •Occasional interruptions or low battery levels can disrupt mop cleaning cycles, requiring manual intervention to maintain consistency.
- •Water tanks are adequate but could be larger for bigger homes, sometimes necessitating mid-cleaning refills.
- •The beater brush is challenging to clean due to fixed ends, making hair and debris removal cumbersome; a removable brush design would be a welcomed improvement.
- •Initial software update process may be glitchy or require resets, and early mapping attempts can lead to the robot getting stuck or unclear room distinctions.
- •Some users report device malfunctions or persistent error messages shortly after purchase, coupled with frustrating customer service experiences including complicated warranty claims and poor communication.
- •Mop pads must be washed carefully—machine washable but sensitive to fabric softener and require natural drying to maintain longevity.
- •While vacuuming performs well overall, it may not capture as much debris as some dual-brush models designed specifically for heavy pet hair or extreme messes.
