TLDR Review: iRobot Roomba 692
Verdict
The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is a high-tech marvel for large homes that want to combine vacuuming and mopping with minimal daily effort, especially if you value smart features like self-emptying, auto-filling, and obstacle avoidance. However, it demands a solid time investment in setup and upkeep to get the best out of it, and the mopping isn’t flawless—expect some streaks and edge misses. If you’re impatient or want something ultra-simple without a steep learning curve, consider a more straightforward robot vacuum instead. But if you’re ready to master the app and maintenance, this device lowers cleaning stress significantly across multiple floor types.
- Top pro:
- Thorough and powerful vacuuming that handles cat litter, pet hair, and medium-pile rugs better than many competitors.
- Top con:
- Requires patience for setup and learning—initial mapping and app navigation can be time-consuming and confusing.
Pros
- •Thorough and powerful vacuuming that handles cat litter, pet hair, and medium-pile rugs better than many competitors.
- •Advanced obstacle avoidance intelligently detects cords, pet toys, drapes, and keeps carpets dry with its Auto-Retract Mopping System.
- •Self-emptying and auto-fill base is very convenient, with up to 60 days of debris emptying and 30 days of water refilling.
- •Accurate and evolving smart mapping creates efficient cleaning routes and allows selective room cleaning via app or voice commands.
- •Quiet operation overall, with less noisy docking station and faster cleaning cycles than many other models.
- •Mop pads are easy to replace and stored in the dock, reducing ongoing maintenance hassles.
- •Effective multi-surface cleaning on hardwood, tile, and carpet without leaving carpets wet.
- •Works well for large, multi-level homes once mapping is fully learned.
- •Comes with helpful features like "Find" to locate the robot if stuck, plus strong integration with Google Assistant and 5GHz Wi-Fi.
Cons
- •Requires patience for setup and learning—initial mapping and app navigation can be time-consuming and confusing.
- •The mopping performance is adequate but can leave streaks, struggles near edges, and is not great on bathroom mats.
- •Maintenance needs are frequent and detailed, especially cleaning filters, rollers, and intake areas due to quick clogging from pet hair.
- •In darker rooms, navigation is less reliable and the robot may give wide berths (~1 foot) around obstacles, reducing cleaning coverage.
- •Some software quirks include delays in app response, errors like "bin full" blocking certain features until reboot, and no spot cleaning button.
- •Occasional issues with battery charging and the mop mechanism requiring manual activation detract from convenience.
- •Customer service experiences vary, with some users praising support and others finding it dismissive or restrictive on feedback.
- •The device may get stuck in narrow spaces or by floor edges, sometimes bumping objects more frequently than expected.
- •The self-emptying feature may get overwhelmed if not manually checked regularly.
- •The product is pricey given these limitations and reported nuisances like base dock noise that can disturb pets.
