TLDR Review: iRobot Roomba 105 VAC AE
Verdict
The iRobot Roomba 105 Vac with AutoEmpty Dock is a compelling choice if you want powerful, hands-off vacuuming combined with useful self-emptying convenience. Its LiDAR navigation and strong suction ensure thorough cleaning across multiple surfaces, making it an excellent time saver for larger or pet-friendly homes. However, if deep mopping, extensive battery life, or more advanced app features are deal-breakers for you, consider other models with enhanced mopping or smarter app control. Overall, it’s a solid investment for anyone prioritizing efficient vacuuming with minimal intervention.
- Top pro:
- The self-emptying dock holds up to 75 days of debris, drastically reducing maintenance and manual bin emptying.
- Top con:
- Battery life can be mediocre, particularly in deep clean mode, which may require more frequent recharging.
Pros
- •The self-emptying dock holds up to 75 days of debris, drastically reducing maintenance and manual bin emptying.
- •Intense power-lifting suction is notably stronger—up to 70 times more powerful than older Roomba 600 series models—ensuring thorough cleaning of dust, pet hair, and debris.
- •ClearView™ LiDAR navigation maps the home accurately for precise coverage and efficient cleaning in neat rows.
- •Multi-surface and 3-stage cleaning system effectively handles various floor types, including carpets, rugs, hardwood, and tile.
- •Voice assistant compatibility (Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant) and app control offer convenient hands-free or remote operation.
- •The robot rarely gets stuck, demonstrating smooth navigation around obstacles, and it finds its charging base reliably.
- •Quiet operation during standard cleaning modes reduces disruption, though the self-emptying dock is louder.
- •The device provides scheduling and automation for a largely hands-off cleaning experience.
- •Works well in larger, tidy homes to save time and effort, especially for daily maintenance.
- •The unit’s design includes an edge-sweeping brush that improves cleaning along walls and edges by 20%.
Cons
- •Battery life can be mediocre, particularly in deep clean mode, which may require more frequent recharging.
- •The mop function is basic and less effective on sticky or dried spills, so manual spot cleaning is often still needed.
- •Noise levels increase during the self-emptying process and when tackling corners or heavy carpet debris.
- •Cannot clean under very low furniture, limiting reach in some tight spaces.
- •The app interface may feel cumbersome, requiring 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and occasional resets; features like battery monitoring and no-go zones could be improved.
- •Occasionally gets stuck on small obstacles like cords despite good navigation overall.
- •The user manual is provided as a PDF within the app, requiring external readers.
- •Pre-cleaning or floor tidying is recommended to avoid obstruction and stuck situations.
- •Slightly pricier than basic robot vacuums, which might deter budget-focused buyers.
- •Best suited for homes with mostly dry-floor cleaning needs; heavy-duty mopping or deep stains are outside its scope.
