TLDR Review: HIFIMAN SUNDARA Headphones
Verdict
The HIFIMAN SUNDARA headphones deliver a *fantastic* planar magnetic listening experience that punches well above its $349 price tag, especially if you have or plan to get a good headphone amplifier to unlock their full potential. If you desire neutral, detailed, and spacious sound for studio work or pure audiophile enjoyment and don’t mind a heavier, open-back design, these will impress. However, if lightweight comfort, noise isolation, or cable quality are high priorities, or if you want something more forgiving without an amp, you might also want to consider alternatives like the Sony MDR-1AM2 for a lighter and closed-back experience. Overall, SUNDARA is a strong contender for audiophiles and professionals seeking a clear, balanced sound signature and great value in the planar magnetic category.
- Top pro:
- Delivers spectacular, well-balanced sound with clear, non-fatiguing highs and precise mids, making it ideal for audiophiles and studio use.
- Top con:
- Requires a dedicated headphone amplifier or high-quality source to reach optimal volume and achieve full bass response; otherwise, bass can sound lacking.
Pros
- •Delivers spectacular, well-balanced sound with clear, non-fatiguing highs and precise mids, making it ideal for audiophiles and studio use.
- •Planar magnetic drivers provide detailed, fast audio with excellent frequency extension and above-average technical performance for the price.
- •Impressive, spacious open-back soundstage with good spatial separation and excellent instrument separation across frequencies.
- •Bass is deep and precise, though naturally lighter, and can be effectively enhanced with EQ for a fuller experience.
- •Comfort is generally good for long listening sessions due to well-designed ear pads and moderate clamping force.
- •Solid metal construction gives a sturdy feel, though some plastic components exist; overall build quality is decent for the price.
- •Preferred by many for professional audio work under $500, offering a neutral sound profile favored over many competitors.
- •Performs best with a quality headphone amplifier and preferably balanced cables, unlocking its full potential and volume.
- •Open-back design provides enjoyable, less fatiguing sound compared to many closed-back alternatives, especially for mixing and critical listening.
- •Represents strong value from emerging audio companies with high-end sound quality at a more accessible price point.
Cons
- •Requires a dedicated headphone amplifier or high-quality source to reach optimal volume and achieve full bass response; otherwise, bass can sound lacking.
- •Open-back design causes bass to diminish off-head and can generate slight driver rattle when not worn.
- •Some users report occasional volume dimming in the left ear, fixable by tapping the ear cup, indicating potential minor build inconsistencies.
- •Heavier and less comfortable over very long sessions compared to lighter models like Sony MDR-1AM2, which also feature a closed-back for isolation.
- •The ear cups do not swivel sideways, which may impact fit adjustment and comfort for some users.
- •Cable is somewhat short and stiff out of the box, and build quality of the cable doesn’t quite match the headphones’ otherwise solid feel.
- •Build quality, while mostly metal, is considered average and less durable compared to premium competitors like Shure or Beyerdynamic.
- •Open-back design leads to sound leakage, making these less suitable for use in noisy environments or around others.
- •Some mixed versions of the model may exist, leading to inconsistencies in sound or build quality between units.
