TLDR Review: Hayward SwimClear Plus Pool Filter
Verdict
The Hayward W3C17502 SwimClear Plus Cartridge Pool Filter offers excellent filtration performance for medium-to-large inground pools, clearing water faster than many alternatives thanks to its large surface area and efficient design. However, potential buyers should be aware of durability concerns around the lid latch and corrosion-prone components, especially in saltwater environments. If you want robust, reliable filtration and don’t mind keeping an eye on parts that may corrode or break over time, this is a solid choice. For those seeking longer-lasting hardware with fewer latch issues, exploring alternative filters with sturdier sealing mechanisms may be worthwhile.
- Top pro:
- Outperforms traditional sand filters by clearing very green water within two days, making pool recovery much faster.
- Top con:
- Requires more frequent cleaning compared to multi-cartridge filters, though washing is easy.
Pros
- •Outperforms traditional sand filters by clearing very green water within two days, making pool recovery much faster.
- •Suitable for large pools (around 12,000 gallons) even when used with a 3/4 horsepower pump paired with a 1 1/2 inch return pipe.
- •Larger filtering area (175 sq ft) improves filtration efficiency and produces a low pressure drop, easing pump workload and increasing water flow.
- •Comes with a pre-installed filter cartridge, adding convenience and value right out of the box.
- •Filter housing is durable and designed to withstand intense sun exposure for many years.
- •Compatible with non-branded replacement cartridges that offer similar performance at a lower cost.
- •Easy to install, especially if you are familiar with PVC water pipes and pool plumbing.
- •Rotating between multiple filters to dry and clean them extends their life significantly.
- •Vendor provides quick customer service with replacement parts available if needed.
- •Effectively cleans pool water much faster than some competing brands.
Cons
- •Requires more frequent cleaning compared to multi-cartridge filters, though washing is easy.
- •Threaded rod that holds the cap is prone to corrosion in saltwater pools; stainless steel or zinc replacements would improve longevity.
- •Intake and exhaust fittings are tapered and need generous application of thread dope or tape plus careful threading to avoid leaks.
- •Lid latch design is problematic; it can become impossible to secure over time, leading to leaks and reduced sealing performance.
- •Pressure gauge is functional but fragile and vulnerable to damage due to minimal protection, especially in shipping or handling.
- •Some users have experienced complete filter system failure in under four years, sometimes causing significant water loss and safety hazards (e.g., water spraying into electrical control boxes).
- •Rerouting or adjustment of plumbing may be necessary during installation because inlet positions differ from older models.
- •Previous expectations of durability (based on users' experience with other brands) were sometimes unmet.
