TLDR Review: First Alert Smoke and CO Detector
Verdict
This First Alert Hard-Wired w/Battery Back-Up Ionization Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector offers solid smoke and CO detection with reliable battery backup and durable construction. However, significant design and mounting compatibility issues mean installation might be a headache, especially if you’re replacing an older model without changing the bracket. If you value ease of installation and worry about fit, you might want to consider looking for alternatives with better base compatibility or user-friendly mounting, though this model does provide good long-term reliability and performance once installed.
- Top pro:
- Works effectively for smoke and carbon monoxide detection as expected.
- Top con:
- Mounting brackets differ significantly from previous models, requiring complete remounting.

- •The alarm does not fit properly into its mounting base, often making ceiling installation impossible without modification.
- •Tight or near-impossible clockwise twist needed to secure the unit onto its bracket by hand.
- •Design flaws affect compatibility with older mounting brackets and bases, requiring tools like a Dremel to widen slots.
- •The seller often did not acknowledge these defects or allow returns based on fitment issues.
- •Some reports say the product may not fully match the description or could be used/refurbished.
- •Installation frustrations due to poor fitment and necessity for physical modifications reduce ease of use.
- •Lack of confirmation on how the unit performs in actual fire situations, only tests with alarms reported.
- •The price is on the higher side for a detector with these design and installation challenges.
