TLDR Review: DJI Mini 5 Pro
Verdict
The DJI Mini 5 Pro Fly More Combo Plus (DJI RC2) stands out as a top-tier mini drone delivering exceptional video quality, stable flight performance, and smart autonomous features in a compact package. It’s perfect for aerial photography enthusiasts who want near-professional video without the bulk or complexity of larger drones. However, if photo quality and gimbal protection are deal-breakers, or if longer battery life with hassle-free propellers is a must, you might want to compare it to other models or wait for firmware improvements. The included upgraded RC2 controller is a real plus for those who want convenience without their phone tethered to the rig. If you want to explore alternatives that may offer better photo quality or different ergonomics, let us know, but overall this DJI combo is a powerful, reliable choice for casual pilots and prosumers alike.
- Top pro:
- Noticeably better camera quality and video footage, featuring a larger 1-inch CMOS sensor than previous models, producing sharp, clean colors and good dynamic range.
- Top con:
- Battery life tends to fall short of manufacturer claims, often providing about 20-30 minutes per battery rather than the advertised 34 minutes.
Pros
- •Noticeably better camera quality and video footage, featuring a larger 1-inch CMOS sensor than previous models, producing sharp, clean colors and good dynamic range.
- •Smooth and stable flying performance even in windy or challenging conditions, thanks to 360-degree obstacle sensing and lidar-enhanced navigation.
- •Fly More Combo Plus includes three batteries offering up to around 45-50 minutes of total flight time, encouraging longer and more frequent use.
- •RC2 controller has a bright built-in screen that eliminates the need for a separate phone or tablet, improving convenience and reducing setup hassle.
- •Very quiet operation relative to its compact size, making it less intrusive during flights.
- •Excellent signal reliability, maintaining connection well over a mile with minimal dropouts, especially when using FCC mode.
- •Advanced automated flight and filming features like ActiveTrack, MasterShots, QuickShots, and Cruise Control allow easy and creative video capture.
- •Compact and lightweight design, weighing right around the 250-gram threshold, making it highly portable and compliant with many regulations.
- •Setup is straightforward with a responsive, intuitive controller, making the drone approachable for casual users and enthusiasts alike.
- •Darker body color improves visual tracking against bright skies compared to lighter-colored drones.
Cons
- •Battery life tends to fall short of manufacturer claims, often providing about 20-30 minutes per battery rather than the advertised 34 minutes.
- •The gimbal protector is difficult to attach and remove, particularly outdoors, and is prone to scratching the gimbal area.
- •Propellers have a locking system that requires pressing each motor individually to close, which users find inconvenient and time-consuming.
- •Occasional noticeable gimbal shake during flight, especially at extreme points and quick turns, which can affect video smoothness.
- •Photo quality has been reported as less impressive compared to video quality, disappointing some users expecting equal performance in stills.
- •The RC2 controller is somewhat heavy, making a lanyard a near necessity for longer flight sessions to avoid fatigue.
- •Adding accessories may push the drone’s weight over the 250-gram limit, which would require compliance with additional rules like Remote ID modules.
- •Without using FCC mode, signal strength can degrade significantly within urban areas, affecting long-distance flight quality.
