TLDR Review: Crucial X9 2TB External SSD
Verdict
The Crucial X9 2TB USB-C External Portable SSD is an excellent choice if you want blazing-fast transfer speeds, ultra portability, and solid durability for everyday and professional use across multiple platforms. Its compact size and quiet operation make it perfect for travel and workstation backups, though you’ll want to watch out for speed limitations on older ports and may want to use alternative backup software instead of the bundled Acronis. If you prefer a metal casing or worry about data corruption with frequent hot-plugging, consider those factors before buying. Overall, this drive is a strong contender in the portable SSD market for users needing reliability and speed without bulk.
- Top pro:
- Extremely compact and lightweight, about the size of a credit card, making it super portable and easy to carry in pockets or bags without added bulk
- Top con:
- Performance speed heavily depends on the quality of the USB-C port; older or slower ports will noticeably reduce transfer speeds
Pros
- •Extremely compact and lightweight, about the size of a credit card, making it super portable and easy to carry in pockets or bags without added bulk
- •Very fast transfer speeds up to around 1050 MB/s on high-speed USB-C ports, suitable for demanding tasks like 4K video editing and large backups
- •Reliable and efficient performance across multiple platforms including PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and Android devices
- •Durable design with drop protection up to around 7.5 feet and some degree of water/dust resistance (IP55), great for frequent travel
- •Completely silent during operation, with no distracting fan or mechanical noise
- •Comes with a solid USB-C to USB-C cable featuring strong strain relief and braided covering for longevity
- •Plug-and-play simplicity with no complicated setup needed, making it user-friendly
- •Ample 2TB storage capacity that handles large photo libraries, video files, game storage, and backups comfortably
- •Performs very well with modern high-quality USB-C ports, achieving real-world backup speeds of around 200 MBps or more
- •Compatible across a wide range of devices and operating systems, offering great versatility
Cons
- •Performance speed heavily depends on the quality of the USB-C port; older or slower ports will noticeably reduce transfer speeds
- •The casing is plastic rather than metal, so it may feel less premium and slightly less rugged compared to some metal-bodied SSDs
- •Can get warm during heavy or sustained data transfers, though no major throttling issues have been reported
- •Bundled Acronis software is a minimal version requiring paid upgrades and includes annoying subscription prompts and privacy concerns
- •Additional bundled apps add little value beyond native OS backup functions and may raise privacy flags for some users
- •There is a risk of data corruption if the drive is repeatedly ejected and plugged into the same USB port without using safely eject functions, which might require recovery tools
- •Requires USB-C or adapters for USB-A devices; older port users need to factor in extra cables or adapters
