TLDR Review: Crucial BX500 4TB SSD
Verdict
The Crucial BX500 4TB SATA SSD is a fantastic option if you need a huge, affordable storage upgrade that significantly outperforms traditional hard drives in read speed and reliability. However, if your workload demands heavy or frequent writing, especially on a primary boot drive, you might encounter frustrating slowdowns and occasional freezes. For gamers, content creators, or users looking to expand storage without breaking the bank, this drive shines best as a secondary or archival drive rather than a performance-critical boot SSD. If you want a more robust option for heavy write tasks or boot purposes, consider looking at drives with faster and more consistent write speeds.
- Top pro:
- Provides a massive 4TB of storage, perfect for storing games, large video files, and extensive data libraries.
- Top con:
- Write speeds are notably slower than expected, especially during heavy or small file writes, sometimes dropping to single-digit MB/s.
Pros
- •Provides a massive 4TB of storage, perfect for storing games, large video files, and extensive data libraries.
- •Consistently delivers advertised read speeds up to 540MB/s, making file reading smooth and quick.
- •Installation is straightforward and user-friendly, suitable even for beginners upgrading laptops or desktops.
- •Offers a significant speed boost and quieter operation compared to traditional HDDs, improving boot times and application responsiveness.
- •Runs cooler under load, which helps with system longevity and stability.
- •Solid build quality and reliability, coming from the trusted Crucial brand.
- •Useful official Crucial software enhances performance tweaking and monitoring.
- •Works well as a secondary drive alongside an M.2 SSD for additional bulk storage.
- •Great value for the price, especially for users wanting a large-capacity SATA SSD.
Cons
- •Write speeds are notably slower than expected, especially during heavy or small file writes, sometimes dropping to single-digit MB/s.
- •The drive can become unresponsive under heavy random write workloads, occasionally requiring a system restart.
- •Not the best choice as a primary boot drive for high-performance modern systems due to inconsistent write performance.
- •Cloning the drive using Crucial’s recommended Acronis software can be problematic, often failing on large partitions and taking excessive time.
- •Users need to rely on alternative cloning tools (like DiskGenius) for reliable disk cloning and partition resizing.
