TLDR Review: Canon EOS RP with RF24-105mm Lens
Verdict
The Canon EOS RP with the RF 24-105mm lens is an excellent compact full-frame camera that's very approachable for beginners and vloggers who want vibrant, quality images without lugging around heavy gear. However, if you plan on shooting fast action or need razor-sharp edge-to-edge performance, the autofocus and kit lens might hold you back. Also, be cautious about purchasing to avoid units that appear used or improperly packaged. For those seeking faster autofocus and better overall image quality out of the box, especially for wildlife or sports photography, considering alternatives like the Sony a7 III might be worthwhile. If you’re mostly shooting travel, portraits, vlogs, or outdoor scenery and want a lightweight full-frame setup, this is a solid choice.
- Top pro:
- Produces consistently great pictures with vibrant colors and excellent detail, especially outdoors.
- Top con:
- Autofocus speed is notably slow, making it challenging to capture fast-moving subjects like wildlife or in dynamic environments.
Pros
- •Produces consistently great pictures with vibrant colors and excellent detail, especially outdoors.
- •The camera is compact, lightweight, and beginner-friendly, making it ideal for those new to serious photography or vlogging.
- •Sturdy and well-built design that feels reliable in hand.
- •The included RF 24-105mm kit lens offers a nice zoom range and smooth operation for various shooting situations.
- •Battery life is decent for casual use.
- •The camera encourages learning and growth in photography skills.
- •Flash attachment can significantly enhance photo quality and is recommended as an accessory.
Cons
- •Autofocus speed is notably slow, making it challenging to capture fast-moving subjects like wildlife or in dynamic environments.
- •The electronic viewfinder (EVF) is small, low resolution, and prone to edge distortion, especially if your eye placement isn’t perfect; this may be less of an issue for users without glasses.
- •The kit lens exhibits poor sharpness at the edges and corners, and many users prefer using EF lenses via an adapter for better image quality.
- •Several buyers have reported receiving units that appear used, including pre-configured settings, unsealed packaging, possibly missing pieces, and lenses with fingerprints or without lens covers.
- •Some included SD cards reportedly contain personal data from previous owners, which is a privacy concern.
- •Battery life, while decent, may require carrying a second battery for longer shoots.
- •Poor performance in fast-paced or demanding photography settings like rainforests or wildlife scenarios.
- •Customer service responsiveness has been criticized, especially regarding refunds after returns.
