TLDR Review: Bosch 1617EVSPK Router Combo Kit
Verdict
The Bosch 1617EVSPK is a solid, versatile wood router combo ideal for serious woodworkers who want the convenience of both plunge and fixed bases with powerful variable speed and constant torque. Its strengths lie in precision adjustments, build quality, and compatibility with a wide range of accessories, making it a great all-around choice for both handheld and table routing applications. However, the lack of an auto shut-off safety feature and some minor quality control issues mean users should be cautious and prepared for routine maintenance. If safety and superb adjustment mechanisms are top priorities, you might also want to explore higher-end models with grip-switch safety features or improved height adjustment systems.
- Top pro:
- The Bosch 1617EVSPK offers a powerful 2.25 HP motor with 12 amps and variable speed settings from 8,000 to 25,000 RPM, providing excellent control for a variety of woodworking tasks.
- Top con:
- The router lacks an auto shut-off or safety grip switch, which raises safety concerns, especially during sudden stoppages or adjustments.
Pros
- •The Bosch 1617EVSPK offers a powerful 2.25 HP motor with 12 amps and variable speed settings from 8,000 to 25,000 RPM, providing excellent control for a variety of woodworking tasks.
- •The built-in Constant Response Circuitry maintains a consistent speed under load, which results in cleaner, more accurate cuts.
- •Quick clamp systems on both the plunge and fixed bases allow for fast tool-free switching between bases, making it highly versatile.
- •Both bases have microfine bit depth adjustment accurate to 1/64 inch, allowing precise and easy setup.
- •The Bosch Precision Centering Design helps center the bit perfectly with sub-bases and optional template guides for enhanced accuracy with jigs and templates.
- •The soft-start feature reduces start-up torque for smoother handling and less surprise kickback.
- •Rugged aluminum motor housing and dust-sealed power switch increase durability and make the router suitable for years of heavy use.
- •Compatible with many router tables and a variety of accessories, including Porter-Cable dovetail jigs and Bosch adapter systems.
- •The combo kit includes two self-releasing collet chucks (1/2" and 1/4") and quality forged wrenches, making bit changes easier.
- •Both bases offer wide openings to accept larger bits and improve visibility while routing.
Cons
- •The router lacks an auto shut-off or safety grip switch, which raises safety concerns, especially during sudden stoppages or adjustments.
- •The fixed-base height adjustment system has a flimsy clip that often pops out, requiring inconvenient lifting of the router for fine adjustments and potentially causing misalignment.
- •Some users report dust accumulation in the switches can cause operational failures, necessitating regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly.
- •The product comes without a centering pin, which is an additional cost for those relying on exact centering for template work.
- •Minor quality control issues such as warped base plates, misaligned parts, and poorly placed warning labels have been noted, which could affect precision and user experience.
- •The plastic doors on storage compartments tend to warp and don’t close properly, allowing sawdust or shavings to gather inside.
- •Some users report occasional reliability problems, including the router stopping operation after minimal use; customer service repair costs can be expensive.
- •Requires brush maintenance every few months and bearing replacement after around 300-400 hours of use to maintain performance.
- •The router’s design requires manual holding to power off safely, increasing the chance of wood damage if not handled carefully.
- •While versatile, it may not excel in very light delicate work or extremely heavy-duty industrial tasks.
