TLDR Review: Bonaire 800 CFM Evaporative Cooler
Verdict
The Bonaire 800 CFM Portable Evaporative Cooler is an excellent choice for those living in dry or moderately humid climates who want an energy-efficient, eco-friendly way to cool large indoor spaces up to 550 sq. ft. Its strong airflow and easy setup make it a practical alternative to traditional AC units, especially if you don’t mind opening a window and refilling the water tank regularly. However, if you need a cooler that works well in humid climates or sealed rooms, or want a quieter unit with automatic water shutoff, this might not be your best bet. For a similar product with potentially more advanced features or better suitability for humid areas, you may want to explore other options, but this model stands out for power and durability in the evaporative cooler category.
- Top pro:
- Delivers powerful, cold airflow comparable to refrigerated air, effectively cooling large rooms without needing ice.
- Top con:
- Requires frequent water refills every 4 hours during continuous use, which can be inconvenient without hose attachment.
Pros
- •Delivers powerful, cold airflow comparable to refrigerated air, effectively cooling large rooms without needing ice.
- •Outperforms similar models with a strong, yet quieter fan.
- •Simple setup with minimal assembly and easy water filling; the 4-5 gallon tank lasts around 4 to 5 hours on high.
- •Works well even on fan-only mode to conserve water while maintaining good airflow.
- •Ideal for dry climates and effective in moderate humidity (around 40%), expanding usability beyond typical swamp cooler conditions.
- •Consumes significantly less power than traditional air conditioners, helping reduce energy bills.
- •Provides versatile control with 3 speeds and multiple fan/water pump settings for personalized comfort.
- •Improves indoor humidity from very dry levels to comfortable ranges, which benefits breathing and overall comfort.
- •Produces soothing ambient noise and a gentle water trickling sound that is not disruptive.
- •Durable build and reliable as an alternative to vented or fragile portable AC units.
Cons
- •Requires frequent water refills every 4 hours during continuous use, which can be inconvenient without hose attachment.
- •Needs an open window or door for proper air circulation to avoid indoor humidity buildup and potential mold.
- •Does not have an automatic shut-off when water runs out, limiting safe nighttime use.
- •Initial instructions can be vague or lacking in detail about optimal indoor placement and usage.
- •Ineffective in high humidity environments (above 65%) where air is already saturated with moisture.
- •Must be properly maintained by running high fan without pump after use to dry the cooling media and prevent mold or odors.
- •Provides noticeable noise during operation, which some may find distracting.
- •Cooling effect lowers room temperature by about 3-4 degrees, but it is not a true air conditioner and won’t drastically chill a sealed space.
- •Best performance requires doors/windows open, making it less ideal for tightly sealed rooms.
- •Attaching an indoor hose for continuous refills is possible but not very practical or neat.
