TLDR Review: ASUS RT-BE88U Router
Verdict
The ASUS RT-BE88U Dual-Band WiFi 7 AiMesh router is a feature-packed powerhouse designed for power users with complex home or small business networks who want extensive port options, multiple network security features without subscription fees, and solid WiFi 7 speeds. However, it isn’t perfectly reliable for everyone—some experience setup challenges and connectivity dropouts after extended use. If you want cutting-edge WiFi 7 with a full 6GHz band and potentially smoother multi-device handling, you might want to explore newer routers optimized for gaming or ultra-high-speed use cases. This model shines when you appreciate robust wired connectivity and advanced admin control but may feel a bit clunky for casual or less experienced users.
- Top pro:
- Stable and strong WiFi signals across 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands with no device dropouts, even when 15 devices are connected simultaneously.
- Top con:
- Setup can be tricky, often requiring multiple attempts to detect internet or modem connections initially.
Pros
- •Stable and strong WiFi signals across 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands with no device dropouts, even when 15 devices are connected simultaneously.
- •Fast WiFi 7 performance, capable of matching max internet speeds up to 1.4 Gbit/s on devices like iPhone.
- •Offers a generous selection of high-speed ports including one 10 Gbit WAN, one SFP+ port (also usable as 10 Gbit), four 2.5 Gbit ports, and four 1 Gbit Ethernet ports, making it a powerful wired hub as well.
- •User-friendly, intuitive online interface with extended admin controls like custom usernames and adjustable timeouts, enabling fine-tuned management without requiring customer service.
- •No recurring subscription fees for built-in security features, making network protection cost-effective.
- •Supports seamless dual WAN failover, automatically switching to mobile data via USB tethering if primary internet fails.
- •Allows creation of multiple WiFi networks for added security and better network organization.
- •Adaptive QoS features optimize bandwidth allocation, particularly beneficial for gaming and streaming.
- •Superior range and more reliable connections compared to older or non-pro router models.
Cons
- •Setup can be tricky, often requiring multiple attempts to detect internet or modem connections initially.
- •Some users experienced reliability issues with internet connectivity dropping after a few weeks, requiring frequent reboots before restoring service.
- •Ethernet ports are spaced closely together, making it difficult to connect cables with thicker connectors.
- •Minor bugs mainly related to Multi-Link Operation (MLO) functionality have been reported.
- •Despite being marketed as WiFi 7, it lacks a dedicated 6GHz band, which can be a drawback for ultra-high-throughput setups in close range.
- •Performance can degrade when multiple devices are used simultaneously, with speed drops at medium distances reported.
- •Not truly future-proof as it lacks certain cutting-edge WiFi 7 features expected to become standard by 2025.
- •Better suited for users with networking knowledge who can navigate its advanced features rather than typical casual users.
- •Some users found quality and performance below expectations considering the premium price point.
