TLDR Review: Asus ROG Strix XG49VQ Monitor
Verdict
The Asus ROG Strix XG49VQ is a fantastic ultrawide display that balances immersive multitasking and smooth gaming performance without demanding a top-tier GPU. Its vivid HDR visuals, excellent FreeSync support, and versatile features make it a standout for gamers and professionals alike who want to replace multi-monitor setups with a single giant screen. However, if you prioritize ultra-high frame rates, NVIDIA G-Sync compatibility, or gaming at 4K or higher resolutions, you might want to explore alternatives better suited for those specific needs. Overall, it’s a premium monitor worth considering for its unique mix of size, speed, and value.
- Top pro:
- The ultrawide 49" curved screen creates an immersive experience roughly equivalent to two 24" monitors side-by-side without a bezel, perfect for multitasking and gaming.
- Top con:
- The large red input port box that appears briefly on boot can be distracting and blocks the Windows login screen momentarily.
Pros
- •The ultrawide 49" curved screen creates an immersive experience roughly equivalent to two 24" monitors side-by-side without a bezel, perfect for multitasking and gaming.
- •FreeSync works flawlessly with AMD GPUs, eliminating screen tearing and ghosting, while the 144Hz refresh rate delivers smooth, fluid motion.
- •Dual Full HD resolution keeps performance manageable and smooth on most gaming rigs without needing a top-tier GPU like an RTX 4090.
- •Great color vibrancy and brightness with crisp, accurate image quality and excellent HDR mode that significantly enhances visuals.
- •The comfortable curve paired with a matte black finish limits glare and fingerprints, making it ideal for long work or gaming sessions.
- •Intuitive ASUS joystick controls on the back simplify navigating the monitor’s menu.
- •Nice extras like on-screen crosshairs help with aiming in FPS games, and Windows FancyZones greatly improves window management on this massive screen.
- •Minimal backlight bleed for an IPS panel, impressive considering the size and panel type.
- •Comes with both DisplayPort and HDMI connectivity and handy cable management on the rear for a clean setup.
- •Excellent overall build quality that outperforms some pricier alternatives in picture and performance.
Cons
- •The large red input port box that appears briefly on boot can be distracting and blocks the Windows login screen momentarily.
- •Refresh rates above 120Hz only work via DisplayPort, limiting peak performance options if you rely on HDMI.
- •Not compatible with NVIDIA G-Sync; Nvidia users may experience some tearing or ghosting unlike with FreeSync GPUs.
- •Ultrawide format causes some games to stretch or compress images, and browsing websites with heavily left or right-aligned layouts can feel awkward.
- •The monitor is large and heavy, requiring a spacious and sturdy desk setup.
- •The large plastic buttons on the back feel somewhat cheap compared to other premium controllers but remain durable.
- •May not be the first choice if you prioritize very high frame rates (much above 60+ fps) or own an RTX 4090, as the Dual Full HD resolution limits maximum visual fidelity in AAA titles.
- •Considerably more expensive than many competing ultrawide models.
- •Some users miss the ultrawide experience in story-driven games due to screen shape, favoring smaller monitors for FPS games.
