TLDR Review: Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Cat Litter
Verdict
*Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Clumping Cat Litter, Fragrance Free 40lb* shines with superior clumping and odor control that many cat owners swear by, especially those sensitive to fragrances. However, if you dread wrestling with heavy, cement-like clumps or a stubborn box, be ready for a bit of hassle. Some users have noticed a dip in quality or stronger ammonia smell issues, so if odor control is your number one priority and you want easier scooping, you might also consider exploring lighter clumping litters or those specifically formulated for multi-cat homes. Still, for a fragrance-free, strong clumping clay litter with excellent odor neutralization, this product remains a strong contender.
- Top pro:
- Excellent clumping ability that forms large, solid clumps without turning to mud, making scooping easier and less messy.
- Top con:
- Packaging is notoriously difficult to open and awkward to handle; the "Press Here" feature frequently fails, leading many to cut open the box.
Pros
- •Excellent clumping ability that forms large, solid clumps without turning to mud, making scooping easier and less messy.
- •Effectively controls odors, including in multi-cat households, reducing ammonia smells and overall litter box unpleasantness.
- •Baking soda addition helps eliminate odors, leading to noticeable freshness appreciated by users and visitors alike.
- •Low tracking formula helps keep litter contained better than some other brands.
- •Fragrance-free, making it suitable for fragrance-sensitive cats and owners, though there may be a slight natural scent.
- •Dust levels are relatively low given the baking soda content, minimizing airborne irritants.
- •Large 40 lb box offers good value and lasts a long time between purchases.
- •Users report this litter performs well in various living environments, from small apartments to larger homes.
- •Generally preferred over alternatives like Dr. Elsey’s or some corn-based litters for clumping and odor control.
Cons
- •Packaging is notoriously difficult to open and awkward to handle; the "Press Here" feature frequently fails, leading many to cut open the box.
- •Clumps can become very dense and heavy, sometimes merging into large cement-like masses that are cumbersome to scoop.
- •Some users report the litter’s consistency has changed recently—larger pebble-like granules can be uncomfortable for cats.
- •A few users experienced strong ammonia odors after a few days despite frequent cleaning, sometimes requiring litter box emptying every other day.
- •Clumping sometimes leaves wet cores that trap unpleasant ammonia smells, which can be released when clumps break apart.
- •Tracking is still an issue for some, despite being marketed as low tracking.
- •Customer service experiences were described as generic and unhelpful by some frustrated users.
- •Reports of overall quality varying between batches, with some owners searching for alternatives due to perceived decline.
