TLDR Review: Apple AirPods Pro
Verdict
The first-generation AirPods Pro remain a **comfortable, polished choice for Apple users** who prioritize excellent low-frequency noise cancellation, natural Transparency mode, and effortless iPhone integration. Their compromises—modest ANC battery life, average call quality, limited Android features, and sound that trails newer rivals—make them less compelling for demanding audiophiles or non-Apple users. At around **$100**, they can be a worthwhile deal, provided the battery condition is reliable and you value Apple’s ecosystem more than having the newest audio performance.
- Top pro:
- Strong active noise cancellation effectively reduces low-frequency sounds such as trains, buses, airplane engines, HVAC systems, and gym noise.
- Top con:
- Sound quality is good but less dynamic and engaging than newer AirPods Pro 2 models and leading Sony competitors; bass also lacks some deep rumble.
Pros
- •Strong active noise cancellation effectively reduces low-frequency sounds such as trains, buses, airplane engines, HVAC systems, and gym noise.
- •Transparency mode sounds natural, making it easy to hear surroundings while commuting, exercising, or crossing streets.
- •The lightweight design and three silicone ear-tip sizes provide a comfortable, secure fit for extended listening, though comfort can vary by ear shape.
- •Clear, balanced sound delivers rich vocals, defined highs, and stronger bass than standard AirPods without becoming harsh or boomy.
- •Seamless Apple integration makes pairing, switching modes, Spatial Audio, and Audio Sharing especially convenient for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.
- •The earbuds stay stable during workouts, and IPX4 sweat and water resistance adds useful everyday protection.
- •Force-sensor stem controls are responsive for playback, calls, track skipping, and switching between noise cancellation and Transparency mode.
- •The wireless charging case provides more than 24 hours of total listening time, and a five-minute charge offers about an hour of playback.
- •Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio can create an immersive surround-sound effect with compatible content.
Cons
- •Sound quality is good but less dynamic and engaging than newer AirPods Pro 2 models and leading Sony competitors; bass also lacks some deep rumble.
- •Noise cancellation is excellent for steady low-frequency noise but less effective against voices, keyboards, applause, and other high-pitched sounds.
- •Enabling noise cancellation can slightly reduce tonal richness and timing precision.
- •Battery life is modest at roughly four hours with noise cancellation enabled, despite the case extending total use beyond 24 hours.
- •The earbuds lack direct volume controls, so volume adjustments require a phone or Siri.
- •Stem squeeze controls can feel fiddly during running or cycling.
- •Call quality is merely adequate, with voices sometimes sounding loud but muffled and microphone recording quality falling short of the earbuds’ otherwise polished experience.
- •Android users get limited customization and fewer smart features, while the earbuds also lack NFC and true multi-device pairing.
- •The small, closed-off passive soundstage is less spacious than what some rivals provide.
- •Bluetooth is generally stable, but walls and distance can still cause occasional dropouts.
