TLDR Review: American Standard Bath Drain
Verdict
The American Standard 1583.470.295 Universal Bath Drain in satin nickel excels in fit and finish tailored for American Standard tubs, offering solid metal durability and leak prevention. However, the pop-up drain linkage design is a significant Achilles’ heel—expect frequent adjustments, potential breakage, and tricky repairs that can become a hassle and costly over time. If you value hassle-free maintenance and a smoother drain operation, you might want to consider alternatives with better linkage durability and easier serviceability. Nonetheless, if you're committed to American Standard tubs and prepared for some elbow grease, this drain will deliver the essential function with style.
- Top pro:

Cons

- •Drain stopper linkage is a major weak point, prone to breaking frequently (reported twice within 8 months).
- •Replacing the linkage is inconvenient because it requires removing the entire drain assembly.
- •Drain mechanism is not very smooth; the spring is weak and often needs manual help to operate fully.
- •Adjustment of the pop-up drain linkage is difficult and time-consuming, sometimes taking about an hour or more.
- •Instructions for adjustment are vague and unhelpful, even for experienced installers.
- •The knob’s shaft has two O-rings that bind over time, requiring regular lubrication.
- •The slotted brass set screw holding the handle is prone to stripping, complicating maintenance.
- •Hair accumulates more on the drain spring than expected, increasing the need for disassembly and cleaning.
- •The overall design quality appears flawed with multiple failure points causing repeated repair needs, sometimes requiring professional plumbers and extra costs.
- •The white paint finish (not satin nickel but related variants) deteriorates over time.
- •The brass screw used is soft, making disassembly difficult; replacing it with a stainless steel M6 screw is recommended.
