TLDR Review: Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor
Verdict
The Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor is a convenient, Alexa-friendly device offering real-time indoor air monitoring with smart home integration perfect for those already deep in the Amazon ecosystem. It provides useful alerts and the ability to automate air quality improvements without complicated setups. However, if you demand a standalone display, more accurate dust sensing, customizable notifications, or a more robust and independent monitoring system, you might find this device limiting due to its heavy reliance on the Alexa app and Wi-Fi connectivity quirks. For more detailed or fail-safe monitoring, considering devices with dedicated displays or hub-based connectivity could be wise. If you prioritize seamless Alexa integration and smart routines over standalone features, this monitor fits nicely. Otherwise, look for alternatives that better address display options and sensor accuracy.
- Top pro:
- Effectively monitors indoor air quality by detecting particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon dioxide (CO2) with good sensitivity for everyday home use.
- Top con:
- Completely dependent on the Alexa app for viewing air quality data, as the device itself lacks a display or widget, forcing you to open the app each time for readings.
Pros
- •Effectively monitors indoor air quality by detecting particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and carbon dioxide (CO2) with good sensitivity for everyday home use.
- •Real-time alerts help you know when air quality dips during activities like sanding, cleaning, or using strong chemicals, prompting timely ventilation.
- •Seamlessly integrates with Alexa devices, allowing voice commands, reports, and historical air quality data access via the Alexa app and Echo Show.
- •Allows smart home routines to trigger automatically based on temperature and air quality, without needing complicated setups like IFTTT or Zigbee hubs.
- •Simple and quick installation, with clear status lights (green, yellow, red) that easily communicate air quality levels visually.
- •Sleek, compact, and unobtrusive design that fits well with any room decor.
- •Helps manage compatible smart air purifiers by activating them when needed, improving air quality efficiently in small to medium rooms.
- •Environmentally friendly packaging with minimal plastic content.
- •Reliable connection to Alexa app for detailed data tracking and useful notifications.
- •Provides a good balance of accuracy and price, suitable for health-conscious users wanting straightforward indoor air monitoring.
Cons
- •Completely dependent on the Alexa app for viewing air quality data, as the device itself lacks a display or widget, forcing you to open the app each time for readings.
- •The bright red warning light for high VOCs, temperature, or CO2 is fixed and can be quite annoying, with no way to turn it off selectively.
- •Notifications are all-or-nothing; turning them off disables every alert, preventing selective control over what you want to be notified about.
- •Sensor readings can sometimes feel inconsistent, such as VOC levels fluctuating without obvious causes or less sensitivity to visible dust/particulate matter.
- •Connectivity relies solely on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and uses an outdated Micro USB power connection, making it more prone to interference and less future-proof than Zigbee or Z-Wave alternatives.
- •No ability to customize the air quality data shown on the app icon or device, limiting quick glances at key info.
- •Alexa integration is limited; for example, you cannot add the device to favorites or get direct air quality feedback through Echo devices without opening the app.
- •A notable app outage in the past caused device failures lasting over 12 hours, highlighting risks of complete dependency on Alexa app stability for monitoring.
- •Lacks a dedicated carbon monoxide alarm, so it shouldn’t replace specialized safety devices for CO detection.
- •Privacy concerns due to unclear data collection and sharing policies around air quality information.
