TLDR Review: Amazon Basics Mechanic Tool Set, 287-Piece
Verdict
The Amazon Basics 287-Piece Mechanic Tool Set offers solid value for DIY enthusiasts and casual home mechanics who want a broad assortment of basic tools with good build quality in a sturdy case. However, if you’re aiming for serious automotive work or need a more balanced metric set—including pliers and ratcheting screwdrivers—you may want to look elsewhere or supplement this kit with missing essentials. Overall, it's great for a starter garage set and typical home repairs but falls short for heavy-duty professional use. If you want a more balanced kit with stronger metric coverage and a ratcheting screwdriver included, consider exploring other sets designed specifically for automotive professionals or serious hobbyists.
- Top pro:
- The 287-piece set covers a wide range of basic automotive and home repair needs, making it an ideal starter kit for weekend mechanics and DIYers.
- Top con:
- The set is somewhat unbalanced: an overemphasis on SAE (imperial) sockets and fewer metric sizes, which are more relevant for modern cars.
Pros
- •The 287-piece set covers a wide range of basic automotive and home repair needs, making it an ideal starter kit for weekend mechanics and DIYers.
- •Tools are well-machined with clear unit markings, sturdy steel construction, and have a satisfying weight that implies durability.
- •Includes a comprehensive selection of sockets, ratchets (both large and small), wrenches, hex keys, driver tips, and useful accessories like extensions, articulated adapters, and nut drivers.
- •Ratchets operate smoothly with good grip and a forward/reverse lever that resists accidental switching.
- •The 3-drawer case is sturdy and well-made, with secure latches on top and front to keep tools safe, even in homes with kids.
- •The set offers comparable or better value and quality than established brands like Dewalt and Craftsman, with more items included overall.
- •Tool organization is functional, and packaging minimizes tool movement during transit.
- •The kit includes magnets at tool tips, which help keep bits in place during use.
- •The case design is compact relative to the number of tools, aiding storage despite the set’s weight.
- •Comprehensive accessory assortment includes both short and long hex keys, deep sockets, and a full range of screwdriver bits (flat, Phillips, Torx, hex).
Cons
- •The set is somewhat unbalanced: an overemphasis on SAE (imperial) sockets and fewer metric sizes, which are more relevant for modern cars.
- •Some common wrench sizes (like 8mm, 15mm, 17mm) are missing, and the open wrench sides lack precision.
- •The sockets can have too much play on the ratchets, making it tricky to work in tight or blind spots.
- •Extensions provided are minimal (only around 3 inches), limiting reach in certain repairs.
- •The set lacks important tools such as pliers, a ratcheting screwdriver, 10mm deep sockets, and E-sockets needed for working on modern vehicles.
- •The case is heavy and not premium; snaps can be stiff initially and may loosen with use.
- •The assortment includes an excessive number of hex keys and screwdriver bits that some users felt could be purchased separately, adding bulk without increasing usefulness.
- •Not ideal for serious or professional mechanics due to missing key tools and limited metric coverage.
- •Some tool slots in the case are either too tight or too loose, affecting organization slightly.
