The Samsung T7 Portable SSD is pretty solid if you're looking for a handy, high-speed storage option with some useful security features. Just keep in mind what it can and can't do for your data backup needs.
From the manufacturer's product details, it uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, letting you reach read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds up to 1,000 MB/s. It's way faster than traditional hard drives, which is perfect for dealing with those larger files.
Now, about security, it has AES 256-bit hardware encryption, which is a fancy way of saying your data is kept safe and sound. But heads up, you won't find any built-in "backup" functions on this drive. So, you'll need to manually move your files, typically by dragging and dropping them yourself.
There are some cross-platform challenges. Our research indicates that some folks have had trouble when they try to partition the SSD for different systems like NTFS for Windows and exFAT for phones. This can mess things up a bit and even erase data if you're not careful, so make sure you back everything up before doing any reformatting.
And while the T7 does a great job keeping your files secure with encryption, the manufacturer recommends not relying on it as your only backup solution since manual updates can risk losing data during formatting. You might want to look into dedicated backup software if you aren't into doing things manually.
So, in short, while the Samsung T7 Portable SSD nails it on speed and security, you should definitely pair it with another backup strategy just to be safe.
Since it won't do automated backups for you, having a personal routine for backups will help keep everything intact.
