Yes, you can run Windows on the MacBook Pro M5—but not through Boot Camp. Apple Silicon Macs require virtualization software instead.
Boot Camp Is Not Available
Boot Camp was discontinued for Apple Silicon. It only works on older Intel-based Macs. The M5's ARM architecture is incompatible with native Boot Camp installation.
Recommended Solution: Parallels Desktop
Parallels Desktop is the Microsoft-authorized solution for running Windows on Apple Silicon Macs.
How it works:
- Runs Windows 11 ARM in a virtual machine alongside macOS
- No restart required—switch between OS instantly
- Seamless copy/paste and drag-and-drop between platforms
- DirectX 11 support for games and graphics applications
Windows Version Required
You must use Windows 11 ARM edition—the standard x86 version won't work. Purchase from the Microsoft Store or use an existing qualifying license.
Performance & Compatibility
| Application Type | Performance | |-----------------|-------------| | Office/productivity | Excellent | | Business software | Very good | | Development tools | Very good | | Casual games | Good (varies) | | x86 legacy apps | Mixed compatibility |
Cost
| Item | Price | |------|-------| | Parallels Desktop | $99/year or $149 one-time | | Windows 11 ARM | $139+ |
Alternatives
- VMware Fusion: Good for enterprise environments
- UTM: Free, open-source option (more technical)
Recommendation
✅ Good fit: Users needing occasional Windows access for specific applications
❌ Consider Windows PC instead: Users needing Windows as their primary daily operating system
