The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 can play AAA games—with the important caveat that game availability on macOS remains limited compared to Windows.
Gaming Hardware Specs
- 10-core GPU with third-generation hardware ray tracing
- Up to 1.6x higher frame rates versus M4
- 153 GB/s memory bandwidth
- 45% graphics improvement in ray-tracing applications
Games Optimized for Apple Silicon
| Title | Performance | |-------|-------------| | Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition | Smooth with MetalFX upscaling | | Resident Evil 4 Remake | Excellent | | Resident Evil Village | Excellent | | Baldur's Gate 3 | High settings, playable | | Hades 2 | Excellent | | Death Stranding Director's Cut | Very good |
The Availability Challenge
The M5's hardware is capable, but most AAA games aren't released for macOS. Only a small fraction of Steam's library has Mac support. Major titles like Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Starfield have no native Mac versions.
Options for Windows-Only Games
- Parallels Desktop: Run Windows 11 ARM in a virtual machine (performance overhead applies)
- CrossOver: Run select Windows games without full virtualization
- Apple Game Porting Toolkit: Technical solution for running some Windows games
Gaming Recommendation
For gaming as a secondary use: The MacBook Pro M5 handles supported titles impressively well while excelling at professional work.
For gaming as a primary use: A dedicated gaming laptop with an NVIDIA RTX GPU offers broader game compatibility (95%+ of Steam library) and better performance in demanding titles.
The M5 proves Apple Silicon can game—now the industry needs to bring more games to the platform.
