This is actually a surprisingly close call now that prices have shifted. Let me walk you through the math.
The Price Situation Right Now
The iPhone 17 starts at $799 for 256GB. Apple dropped the iPhone 16 Pro to $699 for the 128GB version, and carriers are constantly running deals that push it even lower.
The Real Math
If you match storage levels:
- iPhone 17 with 256GB: $799
- iPhone 16 Pro with 256GB: Also $799 at retail
But here's the thing: nobody pays retail for last year's iPhone. The 16 Pro is constantly $100-200 off through carrier deals. So in reality, you might be comparing a $799 iPhone 17 to a $599-699 iPhone 16 Pro.
What Your Money Gets You
Go iPhone 17 and you get:
- The newer chip (A19)
- That smooth 120Hz screen (finally on the base model!)
- Better selfie camera
- More storage out of the box
- But NO telephoto zoom at all
Go iPhone 16 Pro and you get:
- The Pro chip (still excellent)
- 5x optical zoom
- LiDAR for AR and low-light photography
- That premium titanium build
- Pro video features
My Take
If you can snag an iPhone 16 Pro on sale, that's the better camera value by a mile. The telephoto lens alone is worth chasing.
But if you want the newest stuff and mostly take regular photos and selfies, the iPhone 17 delivers solid value.
