Short answer: Yes, they have the same features. But there's some nuance worth understanding.
Everything Apple Intelligence Can Do
Both phones get the full package:
- Writing Tools: Fix your emails, summarize long documents, rewrite that awkward text
- Smart Reply: Those little suggested responses in Messages and Mail
- Genmoji: Make custom emoji of your cat
- Image Playground: Generate images from descriptions
- Better Siri: She actually understands context now
- Notification Summaries: No more notification overload
- Photo Search: Find that picture from three years ago without scrolling forever
All of it works on both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 Pro. No features are locked to one or the other.
Is the iPhone 17 Faster at AI Stuff?
Technically, yes. The A19's Neural Engine can crunch numbers about 4x faster than the A18 Pro at peak performance.
In reality? You won't notice. Image generation takes around 15 seconds on the 16 Pro and maybe 12 seconds on the iPhone 17. Is that difference worth $800+ to you? Probably not.
The Future-Proofing Angle
Here's where it gets speculative. Apple Intelligence is just getting started. Future features might be more demanding. The iPhone 17's beefier Neural Engine could handle those better.
But we're guessing about features that don't exist yet. Both phones meet Apple's requirements and will likely support Apple Intelligence for years.
The RAM Situation
Both have 8GB, which is Apple's minimum for Apple Intelligence. No advantage either way.
My Take
Don't upgrade from a 16 Pro just for AI features. You're not missing anything right now.
