As someone who cares about photography, let me make this simple: the iPhone 16 Pro is the better camera phone. It's not even close.
The Zoom Factor
The iPhone 16 Pro has a real telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. The iPhone 17 has nothing. Just digital zoom, which is basically cropping your photo and making it blurry.
Why does this matter?
- You can photograph your kid's soccer game without standing on the field
- Wildlife photos that don't look like blurry Bigfoot sightings
- Portraits with that nice compressed background look
- Concert shots that actually show the band
For any of these scenarios, the iPhone 16 Pro wins by default.
LiDAR: The Low-Light Secret
That little LiDAR sensor on the 16 Pro does more than you'd think. In dark situations, it helps the camera focus almost instantly. No more hunting. No more blurry shots because the camera couldn't lock on.
Night mode portraits also look noticeably better.
ProRAW for Editing Enthusiasts
If you edit your photos in Lightroom or Photoshop, the 16 Pro's ProRAW gives you so much more to work with. The iPhone 17 can't shoot RAW at all.
Everyday Shots
For normal photos in good light, both phones take nearly identical pictures. The main 48MP sensors are very similar. If you mostly point and shoot in daylight, you won't notice a difference.
The Selfie Exception
The iPhone 17 does win here. Its 18MP Center Stage camera beats the 16 Pro's 12MP selfie cam.
Bottom Line
Photography enthusiast? Get the iPhone 16 Pro. Casual snapper who takes lots of selfies? iPhone 17 is fine.
