❤️The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 includes an upgraded optical heart rate sensor with improved skin contact through the new case design.
Accuracy by Activity Level
Resting and Low-Intensity Activities:
- Typically accurate within 3-5 BPM of chest strap measurements
- Reliable for daily fitness tracking and trend monitoring
Moderate-Intensity Activities:
- Generally accurate within 5-8 BPM
- Minor variations possible during irregular arm movement
High-Intensity Activities:
- Accuracy decreases with intense movement
- Chest strap recommended for precise heart rate zone training
Heart Rate Features
- 24/7 continuous heart rate monitoring
- Resting heart rate tracking
- Real-time workout heart rate display
- Automatic heart rate zone calculation
- Heart rate variability (HRV) for stress monitoring
- High and low heart rate alerts (customizable thresholds)
- Irregular heart rhythm detection (potential AFib notification)
Factors Affecting Accuracy
Optimal conditions:
- Snug fit one finger-width above wrist bone
- Clean sensor area
- Comfortable room temperature
- Consistent skin contact
Accuracy may decrease with:
- Wrist tattoos (ink blocks optical sensor light)
- Cold temperatures (reduced blood flow to skin surface)
- Rapid arm movement during exercise
- Loose watch fit
- Sweat or debris on sensor
Comparison to Other Smartwatches
The Galaxy Watch 8 performs comparably to premium competitors including Apple Watch Series 10 and Garmin Venu devices. All optical wrist sensors share similar limitations during high-intensity activities.
When to Add a Chest Strap
Consider using a compatible chest strap for:
- Heart rate zone training
- Competitive athletic performance tracking
- VO2 max testing
- Situations requiring clinical-level accuracy
The watch pairs with Bluetooth heart rate straps and will use their data for improved accuracy during workouts.
