Cons
- •Contrary to marketing claims, it is not natively compatible with macOS without additional software or reformatting, which frustrates many Mac users.
- •PS5 games can be stored but not played directly from this external drive; they must be moved back to the console for play.
- •Cannot store PS5 saved game data, clips, or screenshots on the drive.
- •Some users experience audio and file fragmentation issues when using the drive for recording files, with problems recurring even on new units.
- •Setup for use as an external drive can be confusing and requires some research.
- •Inconsistencies in model labeling among retailers may cause confusion or mis-purchase.
- •Customer support has been described as unhelpful or deflecting responsibility, especially regarding Mac compatibility claims.
Bottom Line
The Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive is a straightforward, budget-friendly storage solution that excels in Windows environments and PS4 gaming expansion. However, Mac users should beware: it requires extra steps for compatibility, and PS5 gamers will find its use limited. If you primarily need a plug-and-play drive for Windows or to expand PS4 storage and want solid reliability with no fuss, this drive fits the bill. For Mac users or those wanting out-of-the-box support for PlayStation 5 games, looking at alternative drives specifically optimized for those systems might save you some headaches.
