✏️The Pentel GraphGear 1000 is the mechanical pencil we'd point most people to: a metal drafting pencil whose tip retracts into the barrel, at a price ShopSavvy has tracked in the high teens for years. On a tighter budget, its sibling the Graph Gear 500 costs about half as much, and a 24-pack of BIC Xtra-Sparkle works out to roughly 20 to 40 cents a pencil.
How we chose. ShopSavvy doesn't write with or test pencils. These picks come from the makers' published specifications, Amazon owner ratings recorded by ShopSavvy, and ShopSavvy's own price history: 7,693 price observations from 207 retailers between August 2020 and October 2026.
What to look for. Lead size first: 0.5 mm suits fine writing and drawing, 0.7 mm breaks less and suits school and everyday notes. A metal, knurled grip lasts longer than rubber, and a fixed or retracting 4 mm lead sleeve helps when drawing against a ruler. If you write a lot and hate a lopsided point, a lead-rotating pencil like the Kuru Toga keeps the tip even.
At a glance (median price ShopSavvy recorded in the last 12 months, or the latest we have):

The Pentel GraphGear 1000 (PG1015) is a metal-bodied drafting pencil with a knurled grip and a tip that retracts into the barrel when you press the clip, so it can ride in a pocket without stabbing through it. It has a lead-grade window on the barrel and a long, thin lead sleeve that keeps your view of a ruler edge clear.
The metal body makes it heavier than plastic pencils, which some writers like and some don't, and the retracting tip is one more mechanism to wear over years of use.
ShopSavvy has logged 349 prices for it from 13 retailers since October 2020, with a median of $19.29. The 16 prices we recorded in the last 12 months had a median of $17.31; Amazon was at $18.99 on October 4, 2026.

The Pentel Graph Gear 500 (PG525) is the GraphGear 1000's simpler sibling: a metal knurled grip, a fixed 4 mm lead sleeve for drafting and ruler work, and a lead-grade indicator, sold with lead and a mini eraser. The sleeve doesn't retract, so it is better kept in a pencil case than a shirt pocket.
For students and anyone who wants a solid, everyday metal-grip pencil without paying for the retracting tip, it covers most of what the 1000 does.
ShopSavvy has 132 price observations for it from 10 retailers since October 2021. The 13 prices we recorded in the last 12 months had a median of $7.35, and Amazon was at $5.98 on September 20, 2026.

BIC Xtra-Sparkle pencils are the classroom staple: lightweight 0.7 mm pencils with colorful barrels, sold here in a pack of 24. The 0.7 mm lead resists breaking under heavy-handed writing, and at this price nobody minds when one goes missing.
They are disposable-grade pencils without a cushioned grip or a lead-hardness choice, so they aren't the pick for drawing or long writing sessions.
ShopSavvy has logged 7,191 prices for this pack from 201 retailers since August 2020, with a median of $8.99. The 12 prices we recorded in the last 12 months had a median of $4.53, so it has been selling well below its long-run price.

The Uni Kuru Toga Roulette uses Uni's Kuru Toga mechanism, which turns the lead a little each time you lift the pencil off the paper so it wears evenly instead of developing a slanted, smudgy edge. The Roulette version adds a metal ring-pattern grip for a firmer hold and better balance.
The rotation works best with light, consistent pressure; heavy writers may find the slight give in the tip distracting.
Amazon owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 across 7,094 ratings recorded by ShopSavvy. Our price data for it is from September 2024: 11 prices at one retailer, with a median of $8.78.

The rOtring 800 is an all-metal drafting pencil with a hexagonal barrel that won't roll off a desk, a brass lead-advance mechanism, and a twist-and-click action that retracts the whole sleeve and lead into the body. The fixed lead guide gives a clear view of the page for ruler-based drawing.
It costs several times more than the Pentel pencils above for a similar job; buy it for the build and feel, not for better lines.
Amazon owners rate it 4.6 out of 5 across 3,809 ratings recorded by ShopSavvy. Our price data for it is from September 2024: 10 prices at one retailer with a median of $49.28, and Amazon then listed it at $40.05.
