πThe Fluval Flex 9-gallon kit is the pick for most people buying a first fish tank. It is big enough to keep water conditions steady, and the light, pump and three-stage filter are built in and hidden behind the back wall.
How we chose. ShopSavvy doesn't keep fish or test aquariums. These five kits were picked from the manufacturers' published specifications and ShopSavvy's own price history: 2,333 price observations from 104 retailers between August 2020 and October 2026. The prices below are medians of those observations, so one flash sale or one inflated listing doesn't skew them.
What matters most. Start with volume. More water dilutes mistakes, so 5 gallons is a sensible floor for a single betta, and a community of small fish wants more. Then check what's in the box: every kit here includes lighting and filtration, but tropical fish also need a heater, and most kits sell that separately.
At a glance (median price since 2020, then median over the last 12 months):

The Fluval Flex 9-gallon (34 L) is a curved-front glass tank with everything mounted in the back: a three-stage filter (foam, carbon and Biomax ceramic media) in a hidden rear compartment, a pump with two adjustable outlets, and a 7500K LED light that supports live plants. The light mixes white and RGB LEDs and comes with the FLEXPad remote for color blends and effects.
Nine gallons is enough room for a small community of fish or a single betta with plants, while still fitting on a sturdy dresser or stand. It is a tank-and-equipment kit, so budget for a heater, substrate and decor.
ShopSavvy has logged 822 prices for it from 32 retailers since December 2020. The median was $129.98; observations in the last 12 months had a median of $151.97.

The Coralife LED BioCube 16 is an all-in-one cube: the filtration and pump sit in a chamber behind the back wall and the LED lighting is built into the hood, so there is no hang-on equipment to see. At 16 gallons it holds nearly twice the water of the Fluval Flex 9, which gives you more room for fish and more stability when something goes wrong.
The trade-off is price and weight. It costs roughly twice as much as the Flex, and a filled 16-gallon tank needs a stand rated for it.
ShopSavvy has 96 price observations for this kit from 15 retailers since January 2021, with a median of $339.99. The most recent price we recorded was $292.05 at Amazon on October 6, 2026.

The Marina 5-gallon LED kit is sold as a complete beginner setup with LED lighting, and it is the least expensive way into a 5-gallon tank on this list. Five gallons is the usual minimum recommended for a single betta and enough for shrimp or a few nano fish.
It doesn't have the hidden-filtration look of the Fluval or Coralife tanks, and a smaller volume means water quality changes faster, so regular partial water changes matter more.
ShopSavvy has 392 price observations for it from 18 retailers since October 2020; the median was $99.88. Every price we recorded in the last 12 months was $67.99.

The Fluval Spec III is a 2.6-gallon etched-glass tank with aluminum trim, built for desks and countertops. A 31-LED light arches over the top, and a circulation pump with an adjustable nozzle feeds a three-stage filter (foam block, activated carbon and a BioMax insert) in a rear compartment.
At 2.6 gallons it suits shrimp, snails and a planted nano layout better than fish; it is too small for a betta by the usual 5-gallon guideline. Small volumes also swing in temperature and water quality quickly.
ShopSavvy has 785 price observations for it from 40 retailers since August 2020, with a median of $85.85. Prices we recorded in the last 12 months had a median of $95.99.

The Marineland Portrait is a 5-gallon curved-glass tank with a tall, narrow footprint (about 9.5 x 9.5 x 14 inches). Its three-stage filtration (a Rite-Size Z cartridge, Bio-Foam and an adjustable-flow pump) is hidden in the back, and the hinged LED light switches between white, blue-only and off. A glass canopy slides back for feeding.
Five gallons with adjustable flow is a good match for a single betta, which doesn't like strong current. The tall shape gives less swimming length than a long tank of the same volume.
ShopSavvy has 238 price observations for it from 38 retailers since December 2020, with a median of $73.13. The most recent price we recorded was $109.99 at Amazon on October 10, 2026.
