The MacBook Neo's storage cannot be upgraded after purchase. Like all Apple Silicon MacBooks, the SSD is soldered to the logic board as part of the integrated design.
Available Configurations
| Model | Storage | Touch ID | Price | |-------|---------|----------|-------| | Base | 256GB | ❌ No | $599 | | Upgraded | 512GB | ✅ Yes | $699 |
No custom configurations available—choose at purchase.
Why Upgrades Aren't Possible
Apple's unified architecture integrates storage directly on the processor package. This provides performance benefits but eliminates upgradeability—the components cannot be safely removed or replaced.
Managing Storage Constraints
Cloud storage: iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox offload files you don't need locally.
External drives: USB-C SSDs expand storage affordably. Important: Use the left USB-C port for USB 3 speeds (10 Gb/s). The right port is USB 2 (480 Mb/s)—frustratingly slow for external storage.
Network storage: A NAS provides expandable storage accessible over Wi-Fi.
Recommendation
If debating between configurations, choose 512GB:
- Only $100 more
- Includes Touch ID (significant added value)
- Running out of storage severely impacts usability
- Decision is permanent—no upgrade path exists
The $699 MacBook Neo with 512GB offers substantially better value than the base model. The combination of doubled storage plus Touch ID for $100 makes the upgrade worthwhile for nearly all users.
