The Apple Watch Series 11 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. However, accessing all features—particularly Apple Intelligence capabilities—requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later.
Basic Compatibility
Compatible iPhones (iOS 26 required):
- iPhone 11 series and later
- iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
- All iPhone 12, 13, 14 series models
- iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 series
Note: Android phones are not compatible with Apple Watch.
Features with iPhone 11+
All core functionality works:
- Health monitoring (heart rate, ECG, blood oxygen, sleep tracking)
- Hypertension detection
- Sleep apnea notifications
- Workout tracking with GPS
- Notifications and messaging
- Cellular connectivity
- Apple Pay
- Apps and watch faces
- Always-on display
Apple Intelligence Features (iPhone 15 Pro+ Required)
These features require iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or iPhone 16 series:
- Workout Buddy: AI-powered spoken workout coaching
- Smart Notifications: Intelligent notification summaries
- Enhanced Siri: More capable voice assistant
Limitation reason: Apple Intelligence requires A17 Pro chip or later for on-device processing.
Important Considerations
- watchOS 26 cannot be downgraded
- Latest watchOS requires latest iOS
- iPhone SE (3rd gen) supports core features but not Apple Intelligence
Practical Summary
Users with iPhone 11 or newer access all health, fitness, and core smartwatch features. Apple Intelligence extras like Workout Buddy are exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and later, but aren't essential for most Apple Watch functionality.
