Arches Watercolor Paper Blocks, especially the 9x12-inch Cold Press version, get a lot of love for being versatile with watercolor, gouache, ink, and even acrylics. The manufacturer mentions that it has 20 sheets of 140 lb cold press paper made from 100% cotton, which really makes colors pop thanks to its natural white hue.
From what we've gathered, artists appreciate its durability and quality. It's great at handling heavy washes and multiple layers without much buckling, thanks to the cylinder mold production process. This process gives the paper a strong surface that stands up to varied painting techniques.
Plus, the special gelatin sizing used on the paper helps keep colors bright and prevents them from soaking in too much, making blending and erasing pretty smooth.
However, our research did find some recurring issues. Occasionally, the paper might separate from the block during transport or if it's handled roughly—issues that seem more related to packaging or shipping than the quality of the paper itself. There's also some mention of damage during shipping, which again, might be about how it's handled more than anything else.
So overall, while there are some quality control concerns now and then, most watercolor artists really like the Arches Watercolor Block. Its strength and adaptability with different techniques keep it popular among both detailed and expressive painters.
If you decide to buy online, just double-check the seller’s packaging and handling to reduce the chance of anything going wrong during shipping. Despite some minor hiccups, its excellent features and reliable performance have made it a go-to choice for many watercolor enthusiasts.
