nullWhile the iPhone 17 Pro has an IP68 water resistance rating, Apple explicitly recommends against swimming with it. The rating is designed for accidental exposure, not intentional water activities.
Understanding IP68
The IP68 rating means the iPhone 17 Pro survived laboratory testing in:
- Fresh water only (not chlorinated or salt water)
- Still conditions (no waves, jets, or movement)
- 6 meters depth maximum
- 30 minutes duration
Why Swimming Isn't Safe
Pool Water Concerns
Chlorine and pool chemicals gradually degrade the rubber seals that protect against water intrusion. While your phone may survive initial exposures, repeated contact weakens the seals over time, eventually leading to failure.
Ocean Water Risks
Saltwater is corrosive to electronic components, particularly:
- USB-C charging port contacts
- Internal circuitry
- Seal adhesives
Important: If your phone contacts saltwater, rinse immediately with fresh water.
Moving Water Dynamics
IP68 testing uses static water. Swimming generates pressure through arm strokes, waves, and jet currents that can force water past seals designed to handle still water conditions.
Warranty Coverage
Apple's warranty does not cover liquid damage. The company states that water resistance can degrade over time and recommends against intentional water submersion.
Safe Water Practices
The IP68 rating protects against:
- Rain and splashes
- Accidental spills
- Brief, unintentional submersion
For swimming, snorkeling, or water photography, use a dedicated waterproof case or dry bag designed for that purpose. Don't rely on the built-in water resistance for extended water activities.
