What the Rating Actually Means

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rated IP68. In plain English: it can handle being submerged in up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes.

That sounds impressive. But here's what Apple isn't emphasizing in their marketing.

What's Totally Fine

• Dropping your phone in a pool and fishing it out
• Getting caught in a rainstorm
• Sweating all over it during a workout
• Spilling a drink on it
• Rinsing it off under the tap

These everyday accidents? You're covered.

What's Actually Risky

Swimming with it: Repeated submersion puts stress on the seals. Each time is a gamble.

Hot tubs and saunas: Heat is the enemy of water resistance. Those seals don't like it hot.

Ocean/salt water: More corrosive than fresh water. Rinse it immediately if this happens.

Pressure washing or strong showers: High-pressure water can force its way past seals.

Charging while wet: Recipe for electrical damage.

What No One Tells You

Apple doesn't cover water damage. Seriously. Even with IP68, if water gets in and breaks something, that's on you.

Water resistance wears out. Your phone at 2 years old isn't as water resistant as it was on day one.

1. Don't panic
2. Don't charge it yet
3. Shake out the water gently
4. Let it air dry for several hours
5. Don't stick it in rice (dust gets in the ports)
6. Don't use a hair dryer (heat bad)

Think of IP68 as insurance against accidents, not permission to go swimming. Your phone can survive getting wet. That doesn't mean you should test it on purpose.
