The iPhone 17 Pro Max is water-resistant, not waterproof. Understanding this distinction can save you from an expensive repair.
What IP68 Means
The iPhone 17 Pro Max carries an IP68 rating under IEC standard 60529:
- Complete dust protection (the '6' rating)
- Water submersion resistance up to 6 meters (19.7 feet) for 30 minutes (the '8' rating)
This testing occurs in controlled laboratory conditions with still, clean freshwater. Real-world conditions introduce additional risk.
What Your Phone Can Handle
✅ Getting caught in rain
✅ Accidental splashes from drinks or water bottles
✅ Quick drops into sinks, bathtubs, or toilets
✅ Coffee or beverage spills
What You Should Avoid
❌ Swimming (pool, ocean, lake)
❌ Showering with your phone
❌ Underwater photography
❌ Rinsing under tap water to clean it
❌ Exposure to saltwater, chlorinated water, or soapy water
Critical Limitations
Water resistance degrades over time. Every drop, bump, and day of normal use weakens internal seals. A two-year-old iPhone won't match the water resistance of a new one.
Apple doesn't cover water damage under warranty. Despite the IP68 rating, liquid damage repairs come out of your pocket.
Practical Advice
Think of the water resistance as emergency protection, not permission for water activities. The iPhone 17 Pro Max can survive accidental exposure—it's not designed for intentional submersion.
If water protection is critical for your lifestyle, consider a dedicated waterproof case for activities near water.
