Ask Agent About This Product

The Action button on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is that little button where the mute switch used to be. And honestly? Once you customize it, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

How It Works

Press and hold to trigger whatever you've set it to do. Quick press just shows you what it's set to in the Dynamic Island—nothing actually happens.

What Can It Do?

Out of the box, it toggles silent mode (so it works like the old mute switch, just with a press-hold instead of a flip). But here's where it gets interesting:

Built-in options:

• Camera—instantly open camera for photo, video, or selfie
• Flashlight—toggle on/off (incredibly useful at night)
• Voice Memo—start recording immediately
• Focus modes—toggle Do Not Disturb or other Focus
• Translate—real-time language translation
• Visual Intelligence—AI object recognition
• Magnifier—use camera to zoom in on small text
• Shazam—identify what song is playing

The power move: Shortcuts

Assign any Shortcut to the Action button, and suddenly it can do almost anything:

• Open a specific app instantly
• Send a pre-written text to someone
• Control smart home devices
• Play a specific playlist
• Run complex automations

My Favorite Trick

There's this cool thing where you can make the Action button do different things depending on whether you're holding the phone vertically or horizontally. Portrait mode triggers one thing, landscape triggers another. Basically doubles your options.

What I'd Actually Set It To

For most people, I'd suggest Flashlight or Camera. They're the actions you reach for quickly and don't want to dig through your phone for.

If you're missing the mute switch, just leave it on Silent Mode—it works the same way, just with a hold instead of a flip.
