The iPhone 17 Pro Max ships with iOS 26, and you'll get updates for years. Here's what that means.
How Long Will Apple Support It?
Based on Apple's track record, expect:
- 5+ years of major iOS updates (through iOS 31 or so)
- Security patches even longer (possibly 6–7 years)
This is one of the best things about buying an iPhone. Android phones typically get 3–4 years of updates. Apple consistently delivers 5+.
iOS 26 Highlights
Apple Intelligence stuff:
- Writing Tools for summarizing, proofreading, rewriting
- Visual Intelligence for identifying things through your camera
- Image Wand for creating images from sketches
- Clean Up for removing objects from photos
- Better Siri with ChatGPT integration
Communication:
- Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls
- Smart Replies that actually make sense
- Message summaries for busy threads
Photos:
- Search photos by describing what you're looking for
- Better editing tools
- Memory Movies from natural language descriptions
Pro-Only Features
Some iOS 26 features only work on Pro models:
- ProRes video recording
- Action button and Camera Control
- Faster Apple Intelligence (thanks to 12GB RAM)
The Learning Curve
Fair warning: iOS 26 changes some things about navigation and interface. Initial feedback shows some frustration, but most people adapt within a few weeks. It's change, not necessarily bad change.
Why Software Support Matters
Long software support means:
- New features annually
- Security patches against vulnerabilities
- Apps continue to work and update
- Better resale value when you eventually sell
This is a genuine advantage over most Android phones and a real reason why iPhones hold value longer.
