Yes, the Lionel Polar Express Ready-to-Play train set does have a remote, but unfortunately, it doesn't have volume control for the sound effects. The remote takes three AAA batteries (which you'll need to get separately) and lets you control the train's speed, direction, and sounds, like that classic whistle and some announcements.
The manufacturer describes the remote as a big plus for running this holiday-themed train set, especially with the track layouts they offer, like circles, rectangles, or ovals. It's great for wrapping around your Christmas tree or adding to your festive decorations. Pairing the remote with the train is pretty easy—just make sure the train's switched on first.
From what we've found, lots of people think the remote adds a lot to the fun of this set, but just be aware that the sound effects have a fixed volume. A few folks have mentioned some issues with the connection or sound quality, but these can often be fixed by swapping out the batteries. Since the train can go through batteries quickly, you might want to think about getting rechargeable AAA batteries if this is going to be a favorite holiday activity.
While the remote really adds to the nostalgic and magical vibe of the Polar Express set, if you're looking for adjustable sound settings, it's something to consider.
Still, for bringing extra holiday cheer and charm, this train set makes a wonderful, memorable addition for holiday gatherings.
