Yes, the MacBook Air M4 handles video editing well, including 4K and even 6K footage, though performance varies by application and workload intensity.
Final Cut Pro: Excellent Performance
Final Cut Pro is optimized for Apple Silicon and delivers impressive results on the M4:
- Smooth timeline scrubbing with real-time playback
- Fast effects rendering at standard preview resolutions
- Quick export times: a 30-minute 4K project exports in under 2 minutes
- Hardware-accelerated encoding maximizes efficiency
For most video creators working in Final Cut, the MacBook Air M4 handles the job capably.
Adobe Premiere Pro: Mixed Results
Premiere Pro runs but with notable caveats:
- Basic editing and timeline work is smooth
- Export times are 2-3x longer than MacBook Pro models
- Heavy effects and color grading can trigger thermal throttling
- Some hardware acceleration features are limited
DaVinci Resolve: Solid for Standard Work
DaVinci Resolve handles standard workflows well:
- Editing and color grading perform smoothly
- Basic visual effects work as expected
- Heavy noise reduction and complex Fusion work can be challenging
The Thermal Reality
The MacBook Air's fanless design creates practical limitations:
- Short bursts of intensive work handle well
- Extended rendering sessions may cause the chip to throttle
- The keyboard area can warm during heavy use
- Performance recovers quickly once the workload decreases
Who Should Consider It
The MacBook Air M4 is well-suited for:
- YouTube content creators
- Social media video production
- Documentary and interview editing
- Hobbyist and semi-professional editors
- Professionals who prioritize portability
Consider the MacBook Pro if you:
- Edit professionally 8+ hours daily
- Work heavily with effects and graphics
- Need the fastest possible export times
- Regularly handle high-resolution RAW footage
