Pros
- •Designed specifically for NAS systems, ensuring steady, reliable performance in home offices and medium-sized businesses with up to 8 bays.
- •Runs quietly and stays cool during operation, making it unobtrusive in a shared environment.
- •Offers 4TB of storage with 256 MB cache, providing smooth and consistent transfer speeds suitable for backups and data archiving.
- •Easy installation and seamless integration into existing NAS setups without compatibility headaches.
- •Delivers dependable high-quality performance consistent with Western Digital’s Red Plus line standards.
- •Generally durable and reliable for long-term NAS use, with users reporting strong longevity over multiple years.
- •Offers good value per terabyte, especially for users needing reliable storage without extra frills or flashy features.
- •Maintains similar speed in ZFS arrays compared to previous models, helpful for users upgrading drives gradually.
Cons
- •Runs at 5400 RPM which is slower compared to higher RPM drives, so not the best choice if ultra-fast speed is a priority.
- •Slightly heavier than smaller capacity drives, meaning it requires careful handling during installation.
- •No added features like fancy LED indicators or bundled software for file management—this is plain storage power, nothing extra.
- •Some buyers reported warranty registration confusion due to OEM vs retail packaging discrepancies, so verifying serial number and warranty status after purchase is advised.
- •Occasional rare failures have been reported, such as drives that won’t initialize or format, though these are offset by responsive customer service.
- •A few users noted noticeable noise during heavier use, though most agree it’s relatively quiet for a mechanical NAS drive.
Bottom Line
If you're looking for a solid, no-nonsense 4TB NAS hard drive that balances reliability, quiet operation, and value, the Western Digital WD Red Plus WD40EFPX fits well for home or small business NAS environments. Just keep in mind the 5400 RPM speed means it’s optimized more for longevity and lower noise rather than blazing-fast performance. Also, double-check warranty status post-purchase due to some reported OEM packaging quirks. For users needing faster speeds or larger capacity, considering the 14TB WD Red Plus might be worthwhile.
