Pros
- •Effectively removes multiple layers of paint and varnish, including oil-based, water-based, acrylic, latex, and old or fresh paint
- •Safer alternative to typical solvent-based removers with minimal inhalation risk and no fumes
- •Pleasant orange scent makes the application experience more tolerable
- •Thick consistency works well on vertical surfaces without dripping, allowing for easy application and good coverage
- •Can be easily stripped off when covered with plastic wrap after application, simplifying the cleanup process
- •Gentle on users while still delivering strong cleaning performance
Cons
- •Requires an impractically long dwell time of 24 hours for optimal results, which significantly extends project timelines
- •Difficult to dispense from the bottle and requires a container that allows scooping for easier handling
- •May require multiple applications and significantly more product than advertised to effectively remove multiple coats of paint
- •Can remove minimal paint even after extended setting periods on some surfaces
Bottom Line
Smart 'n Easy Citrus Paint & Varnish Remover Gel is a solid choice if you're willing to be patient and value safety and ease of use over speed. The product genuinely delivers on stripping multiple paint layers without harsh fumes, making it ideal for indoor projects where ventilation is limited. However, the lengthy 24-hour dwell time and potential need for multiple applications mean this isn't the best option if you're in a hurry or working on heavily painted surfaces where efficiency matters most. The dispenser design could use improvement, but overall, it's an effective and user-friendly solution for DIY paint removal projects.
