Pros
- •When used consistently as part of the full 4 Step Program, this product performs exceptionally well at improving lawn appearance and controlling crabgrass.
- •Many users report a visibly better, healthier-looking lawn after applying the Step 1 formula along with subsequent steps.
- •It’s a reliable fertilizer that not only prevents crabgrass but also helps feed and seed your lawn for overall yard enhancement.
- •The program’s overall effectiveness is praised, especially when all steps are followed diligently.
- •Users find it highly recommended for those committed to a full seasonal lawn care routine.
Cons
- •The granules tend to clump together, often due to moisture exposure, which can make spreading challenging and reduce compatibility with broadcast spreaders.
- •Some customers noted lumps that needed breaking up before application, which adds extra effort.
- •There are concerns about inconsistent results, with some users unsure if weed control was significantly better than no treatment at all.
- •Packaging issues surfaced in a few reports, including ripped or taped bags and weight making handling less convenient.
- •Maintaining perfect adherence to all steps is tricky, and missing a step can lead to weed growth despite treatment.
- •A few reviewers felt the quality did not always meet their prior expectations based on the brand’s reputation.
Bottom Line
The Scotts 4 Step Program Step 1 Crabgrass Preventer Control Formula is a solid choice if you plan to commit to the entire lawn care program, as its full potential shows best with consistent, multi-step use. However, if you want a simpler, fuss-free product or have issues with granule clumping, you might want to watch for packaging and texture or consider alternative crabgrass preventers that emphasize easier application. Overall, it’s a dependable fertilizing and weed control solution for moderate to large yards up to 15,000 square feet, but patience and commitment pay off the most here.
