Pros
- •Rubbermaid Roughneck totes are known for their high durability and reliable construction, making them ideal for long-term storage and heavy-duty use.
- •The lids provide a tight, often air-tight seal that helps keep out dust, debris, and moisture, protecting contents effectively.
- •Built-in holes under the handles are a user-friendly feature for securing the totes with bungee cords or ropes during transport.
- •The 40-gallon size is versatile and practical, fitting a wide range of household items including tools, toys, cleaning supplies, and moving essentials.
- •These totes are stackable and nestable, saving space when not in use and allowing organized vertical storage when loaded.
- •Users report the containers are perfect for moving and transporting items safely in pickup beds or vehicles.
- •The dependable quality and consistent design across Rubbermaid’s Roughneck line have earned strong brand trust.
- •They are easy to handle and carry thanks to the well-sized handles and balanced shape.
- •The pack of 2 offers good value, meeting the expectations for both durability and functionality.
Cons
- •Several users find the hinged lids flimsier compared to older versions, sometimes needing tape or additional securing methods to stay closed.
- •While the lids seal tightly, the snap closure mechanism can be unreliable and may fail under heavy stacking or frequent use.
- •The totes can collapse or lose structural integrity when stacked two or three high over time, especially after months of use.
- •Availability is sometimes limited in retail stores, requiring customers to rely on online purchasing.
- •Plastic hooks do not fit well with the handle holes, so only metal hook bungee cords work effectively for securing.
Bottom Line
If you need tough, reliable storage totes that can handle tools, toys, and heavy loads with a good seal against dust and moisture, the Rubbermaid Roughneck 40 Gallon Storage Totes deliver consistent and durable performance. Just be aware the hinged lids can feel a bit flimsy and may require extra securing, especially if you plan to stack many totes. For more secure lid closure and durability in stacking, you might consider heavy-duty alternatives, but for everyday household and moving storage needs, these totes hit a sweet spot in value and function.
