Cons
- •Slight reduction in speeds (~8%), with some latency increase on distant servers
- •Obfuscation and Stealth Mode may slow connections further and have limited effectiveness in highly restrictive regions like China or Russia
- •Customer support primarily via email and online resources; live chat is absent, which could delay help
- •Higher pricing for longer-term plans and a prorated refund policy may be less flexible for some users
- •Limited effectiveness of stealth features and obfuscation tools in really tough regions or oppressive censorship environments
- •No malware or phishing protections, and no built-in Smart DNS support for easier streaming in some cases
Bottom Line
We think Proton VPN is a solid choice for privacy-focused users, thanks to its transparent, open-source architecture, extensive server network, and impressive streaming capabilities—even in its free version. However, speed is moderate and occasional connection issues in highly restrictive regions might be frustrating. For users wanting a top-tier, privacy-conscious VPN with broad platform support and excellent transparency, Proton VPN is worth considering; otherwise, those in need of faster speeds or premium support might want to explore alternatives like <component-button-product identifier="12345-67890">.
