Used & Refurbished

- •Highly detailed and realistic, with features like a beeping scanner, moving conveyor belt, and cash register that make pretend play engaging
- •Sturdy construction and well-made components that withstand active toddler play
- •Easy to assemble with clear instructions; assembly took about 1.5 hours for most users
- •Encourages imaginative role-play around shopping and kitchen organization
- •Includes interactive features like a light-up scanner and a working calculator, adding fun to pretend transactions
- •Compact size fits well in small play areas, making it suitable for limited spaces
- •Kids enjoy pretending to scan items, pay, and handle toys like groceries and credit cards
- •Provides ample storage with shelves and fridge/freezer for organizing toy food and accessories
- •Fun for kids aged 3 and older, supporting developmental skills like role-playing and fine motor control
- •Packaged neatly, and assembly is straightforward, especially when using a screwdriver or screw gun
Cons
- •The refrigerator/freezer door is fragile; it has a known recurring issue where the bottom hinge clip breaks easily and the door falls off
- •Additional accessories like aprons and signs require separate purchase, which feels like an oversight considering the high price
- •The keypad/calculator was reportedly defective out of the box, with only one number registering, and customer service was unhelpful
- •Does not include any grocery items or play food, so purchase separately to complete the experience
- •The fridge door latch could be more realistic; currently, it uses small holes that can detract from the realistic look
- •Some users find the sound features could be more varied or improve with additional sound effects for credit card swipes and checkout
- •Made of particle board, which is lightweight but might not withstand rough handling over many years
- •The conveyor belt, while fun, might not be as durable in the long run for especially energetic children
- •The scanner requires batteries (2 AA) and can be somewhat finicky—sometimes the beeping isn’t consistent
- •The overall price is quite high, and some feel it could come with more accessories or features included
Bottom Line
This Melissa & Doug grocery store offers a wonderfully realistic and detailed pretend play experience that children 3 and older will enjoy. However, the recurring durability issues—particularly with the fridge/freezer door—plus the need for additional purchases for complete accessories, are worth considering before buying. If you’re looking for a more durable option with all accessories included, you might want to explore other brands or second-hand options. Otherwise, this setup provides hours of imaginative fun for young aspiring shoppers and cashiers, as long as you’re prepared for some minor repairs down the line.
